Public Influences
Being human it comes naturally to be concerned about what others think. Often people find themselves wondering how someone will react to a decision made. What-if’s from other people are one of the most influential reasons a decision is made. This is a difficult world, one that pushes law enforcement to do things without the right intentions. Decisions get made on surroundings, sometimes with little to no thought process. Poor decisions in a working environment are an effect of people constantly feeling judged. Rather than standing out and making the right decision, police officers often follow what others think they should do. In this essay, I will argue that the police officer was easily influenced by a community to make …show more content…

Once the officer started talking with the public about the incident, this started to make an effect on his judgment. “Various Burmans stopped me on the way and told me about the elephant’s doings” (Orwell 621.) Without taking the time to think the officer was compiling information on the elephant without actually witnessing any of the doings. Therefore, this was becoming an impact on his decision without him realizing it. The officer had been tasked to inspect the issue of an escaped elephant, not speak with the public about the incident. As a role model, keep from being publicly influenced; the officer should not have said what he was doing or where he was going. This would have helped eliminate any beginnings to public influence. “The people said that the elephant had come suddenly upon him round the corner of the hut, caught him with its trunk, put its foot on his back and ground him into the earth” (Orwell 621.) This makes it sound like the elephant was out to murder the man. Of course the elephant ground the man into the earth; the Burmans are telling the story out of fear, they just witnessed a man die. Any story has details added to it as someone may remember, but that doesn’t make the story factual. The only thing that can be known is that a person is dead because of the elephant. Animals have a fight or flight process; the officer doesn’t know if the elephant attacked out of fear and fought back because it was provoked or if the man was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. When the officer heard of the doings by the elephant, its best to understand that the elephant is an animal, it has no sense of right or wrong, it protects or it flees. The officer as stated previously is ill educated but did understand that the elephant was chained, therefore, the officer needed to understand the elephant sought freedom and just wanted to get away. When speaking with the public, the officer should have kept to information that would simply lead him to the elephant, not impact a judgment on the elephant that it was violent based on stories
