Public Health Personal Statement

I would not necessarily say that public health has been my passion since childhood. My personal experiences led me to believe that I can, with the right education, make impact as a public health professional in both my nation (Liberia) and the world. The scarcities of basic necessities such as clean drinking water, food and healthcare in Liberia had and will continue to have alarming impacts on its population as well as its economic viability. While many Liberians, including me, were made to believe that living without these basic humans needs was normal, deep within me, I knew that something was broken. With an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a skill in qualitative research method, a graduate degree in global health will give me additional credentials in connecting the gap that exists between social justice and healthcare. Through community-engaged research, public health professionals may be able to uncover some of the causes of dismal healthcare systems around the world. Are people not getting the care they need due to social factors? Is it because of politics, policies, or economics? These questions and many others can be answered only from engaging a population through research and dialogue. It is also imperative that such engagement is done with a global perspective as its backdrop. For instance, a toy made in China that is tinted with lead has a high probability of poisoning a kid somewhere deep in the forest of Liberia. Due to globalization, what affects one part of the world can affect almost every area. Thinking locally with a global mindset is effective in dealing with health factors that create health problems. My degree in global health will provide me the knowledge I need in addressing the conditions that plague people around the world and how to engage in actions that will alleviate such
