Located in North Portland Roosevelt high school is situated in the heart of the St. Johns neighborhood. Much like the community, the school is experiencing a rebirth of sorts with aspirations for building a thriving community school possessing a strong core program grounded in a commitment to personalizing learning for all students. A recent recipient of a significant state School Improvement Grant Roosevelt staff, students and community have been working diligently over the past 18 months planning for and implementing a transformation model (See Attachment XX for specific details) with significant technology themes that will ultimately reshape the school and community.
With this emphasis on technology ensuring students have access to essential tools and resources when they need it is essential. For the population of students in the North Portland community this has been and continues to be an ongoing challenge and a real impediment for effective engagement in the current education model and absolutely essential as we look forward to an educational system and a world where access will be intrinsically linked to success. To give you an idea of the challenges currently facing this population, only 42% of families, 296 of 694 have self identified email addresses in the student information system. National data would also suggest that the number of those with Internet access at home falls well below that number. Furthermore we have a population of students where nearly 80% are participating in the free and reduced lunch program, 68% are from identified minority, and most troubling only 37% are completin...

With each student having a mobile device this affords us greater flexibility in how students access and consume content. As the Ed Box evolves and students capability with these mobile devices expands we are now afforded greater instructional flexibility and opportunities to further customize and tailor individual learning experiences with a strong data driven themes. Online learning learning becomes the norm, and for those students needing to recover credits or access courses not available at Roosevelt access is no longer a significant factor. Virtual learning will spawn a growth in eBooks, instructional innovation, and communities of collaboration and learning.
For years, the United States government has been trying to find a way to lower the obesity in the country. However, the approach it is using, i.e. taxing unhealthy food, is not the most effective one. People are going to purchase whatever products they wish, whether the price is increased a few cents or not. Junk food options are already set at a more reasonable price than healthy foods, enticing people to buy these less expensive goods. Even though putting a tax on other products, such as tobacco, has served the intended purpose, food is a necessity humans must have for survival. Society is used to consuming foods they want, and will continue to do so. Putting a tax on unhealthy food will not necessarily lower the obesity rate because there are other factors that contribute to this problem. Moreover, taxing measures are usually intended for the collective benefit of society rather than the individual. They are usually perceived as another way the government uses to take money out of the citizens’ pockets. Ultimately, thinking that higher taxes on unhealthy foods will help curb down the obesity rate in the country would be similar to say that cost is the sole contributing factor to this public health problem. Imposing taxes will not help lower the consumption level because these foods will still have lower prices than healthier choices. Taxes do not impact the nutritional value of foods, and their only predictable effect is to help in generating additional revenue for the government.
Strategies that worked in a classroom from 1996, may not work for todays student in 2015. As an administrator one must be able to adapt to change. Currently, the biggest wave of change shaped by the addition of mobile technology in the classroom. With this change in education, administrators must be willing to strategize and find ways to shape instructional strategies that reflect today’s classroom climate. The students consistently score well on statewide tests, and they are well prepared for high school and beyond. But the School Building Committee and School Administration, after looking at multiple sites, touring other schools and reviewing multiple options, realized that a new school has substantial advantages over renovating and adding to the existing school. A new building will furnish teachers with the tools necessary to meet the growing needs of our student population. Individualized instructional spaces for English Language Learners and students with special needs will allow these students to receive the specialized instruction they require to make appropriate progress and keep up with their grade level peers. Additionally, the new building will provide the infrastructure to integrate modern technology into the educational program, supporting students as they utilize software to develop concepts and permitting teachers to use programs that can target specific student needs and learning styles. Group spaces in the building will bring teams of student together to collaborate on school projects or attend presentations. Public service is a very beneficial activity. It can help teach people life skills, social skills, and responsibility. However, if required, it can bring about issues. If a person is required to perform public service between high school and college, it is possible that he or she might not go back to school or try to get a full time job. Money could also be an issue; if someone is performing public service, he or she cannot have a steady job to earn a sufficient income. Almost everyone attends a school at one time in their life, whether the classroom includes technology or not. Research shows that technology isn’t used as often as one might think. The article, “High Access and Low Use of Technology in High School Classrooms” illustrates the use of technology by stating that only one in ten elementary and middle school teachers are daily users of computers (Cuban, Kirkpatrick, Peck). Most schools now have classrooms that use technology throughout the entire class time and even at home to do homework. Although some people might agree with the use of technology in class, it is more harmful to the students than useful.
This article discusses the use of the Internet in the classroom and how it can be used to personalize education. The effectiveness of the Internet in the classroom is evaluated at the Henry Hudson Regional School in Highlands, New Jersey. A faculty member at the school explains that the Internet was introduced to their classrooms to expand limited electives, advanced placement, and foreign language offerings. The use of the Internet allows small schools to provide an education that would not be economically possible without it.
Having this accessibility, people with disabilities and students who have things going on in their life that prevent them from attending a normal school are in need of accessing an education virtually. Students with disabilities say that the Internet has improved their quality of life. With this statement said, it is known that people with benefit from accessing education virtually. People with disabilities are falling behind in education and careers, so having this as an option can improve both of those things. As technology advances, a social phenomenon is beginning to change the way that Americans are obtaining college degrees. Approximately 3.2 million students were enrolled in at least one completely online class in the fall semester of 2005 (Clark-Ibanez & Scott, 2008). Technology has had a negative impact on education by causing distractions during class lectures and assignments. The over use of technology is leading to a loss in communication skills and troubles in reading. The use of technology causes many people to have the temptation for cheating in and out of classrooms, resulting in students not wanting to study. Not every student has the capability of connecting to the internet or have contact to technology. As more people began to access the Internet through smart phones and tablets rather than laptops and computers, it is not a surprise that they would also want to transform the American education system by bringing tablets into classrooms. In fact, a few schools around the country have already replaced textbooks with tablets and have seen improvements in students’ standardized test scores. Using tablets instead of textbooks is not only convenient and helpful, but it can also reduce the amount of paper wastes in school. However, it is not a good idea to completely transform textbooks with tablets with the current technology, for it can not only be damaging to the environment and costly to set up, but also might not be effective in improving K-12 education in the long run.

This paper is going to introduce and further explore how digital learning will change education in the future. Digital learning is defined as learning through digital devices such as computers, tablets, or smart phones over the Internet. It is also known by other names, such as virtual learning, online learning, e-learning, distance learning, or continuing education. Digital learning was first introduced as “Computer Assisted Learning Center” in 1982 [1]. The first online course was introduced by “Computer Assisted Learning Campus” in 1994, in which students can take courses over the web [1]. Michael Chasen and Matthew Pittinsky founded Blackboard in 1997. In 1999, Blackboard, SmartThinking and e-campus became popular among different universities around the world. Between 2002 and 2008, there was an increase in students taking online courses by 187% [2]. In the year 2009, total number of students who were taking web-based curriculum was 5.5 million [2]. This statistic shows that the online learning trend is on the rise each day.
The implementation of online learning in many universities has proven to be a successful method of course delivery (Regan, Evmenova, Baker, Jerome, Spencer, Lawson, & Werner, 2012). Dickson-Dean, Galyen, and Moore (2011) proposed that online learning can promote successful learning opportunities for students as well as rewarding benefits for all educational stakeholders. Factors that contribute to the success of online learning include, but are not limited to, flexibility and accessibility, cost reduction, increased retention, and varied learning opportunities (Neely & Tucker, 2010). Online learning and associated technology is becoming increasingly adaptable and can be used to meet the educational needs of all students while providing opportunities for differentiated instruction (Krishnakumar & Kumar, 2011).
