There are many factors that influence a person wanting to attend college or not. Some of these factors can be money problems, being indecisive on what you would like to study, and feeling that college is not the best fit for you. Many students come out of high school broke without a job resulting in being unable to pay for college tuition. This affects their ability when getting into college since they simply do not have enough money to pay off college tuition every year. Being indecisive on what major you would like to pursue also affects your reasoning into not going to college since some students don't know what they are good in or what majors interests them.

In an interview with my mother, Gloria Chukwueke, I found out how important it is to know what you want to study in college. My mother studied to be a Psychiatric Registered Nurse in college. She always had the thought in her mind to be a nurse even in her younger years. For her growing up, seeing nurses in all white made her happy and that when she found her passion. She stresses the fact that it was a hard process and that it’s essential in today’s job market but that the benefits are very fulfilling. ‘’I love waking up every morning going to work because to me going to my job isn't work to me. It's more of a hobby since it is something I enjoy doing.’’, she said. She explains to me how I must find a job I am excited to go to every morning because it won't feel like work to me but more of a hobby as she says. I don't want to be like other people who work a job that they hate just for the money or just because they thought it was easy for them to major in. I know by being passionate in the field I choose will help me have a positive outlook on my life and how I would look back at college to see how much it has helped …show more content…
In article called Same Job, Higher Salary, It is shown that people with a higher level of education usually make more money than those without one. For example, A Dental hygienist without a degree usually makes 30k but when you have a college degree the number goes way up. The average goes up to 53k which is a 20+ thousand increase in your money earned. One can see this is one of the more straight forward reasons to want to get a college degree. Another side of money and college is the Cost. Some may think that college is very unaffordable, but the truth is that after all the financial aid and scholarships are taken into account college is really that expensive. Over the past years of getting a college degree was the pathway to get a settle career. College has been a reason for people to carry on after high school. Now that tuition has been raised, getting a degree seems to drain students with more loans and could be in debt. College has been raised to the point where people rather start working at a minimum wage than continuing with school. Working on a part time job would be an easier choice rather than pursuing towards their degree. As people attend college, fees build up and students loaning money and possibly be in debt. The main reason why people go to college is not because they want to but because they have to. Most high school seniors are pressured by their guidance counselors and parents to go to college because it is "the right thing to do." In the essay that Caroline Bird wrote "College is a Waste of Time and Money", she states that students go to college because " . . . Mother wanted them to go, or some other reason entirely irrelevant to the course of studies for which college is supposedly organized." (481) The student may have different ideas about what he or she wants to do in life, but because they think that these "mentors" know what is best for them, they probably end up doing something they do not want to do, resulting in being miserable and resentful.
There is a graph that was published in the article “Value of a College Degree” and it does a phenomenal job showing the difference between having a high school degree compared to having some sort of college education. Although it shows that the average person who gets a bachelors in college tends to make about 500 dollars more than someone that only has a high school diploma, it also shows that the unemployment rate for people with a bachelors degree is about half that of someone with only a high school diploma

People are more curious now and speculate if a degree is worth it before they go and spend all the time and money for a college education. In “The Value of a College Degree” Jaison R. Abel and Richard Deitz says “Tuition costs have been rising considerably faster than inflation, student debt is mounting, wages for college graduates have been falling, and recent college graduates have been struggling to find good jobs. These trends might lead one to believe that college is no longer a good investment” (Abel and Deitz, 2014). This is a good counter argument but I can tell you why it isn’t valid. Why is the value of a degree so high even when tuition costs are rising and college graduate wages are getting less and less? The answer is because the wages of high school graduates have also been dropping. Since both wages are dropping wouldn’t it make sense to go with the higher one? Another reason behind why getting a college education is worth it is it will get you better work benefits. With higher paying jobs comes more benefits, but these jobs require a higher education. People with a college degree tend to make more money than those who didn’t attend college. This is because most of the jobs that have a higher earning require a college degree. People that only get their school diploma don’t make as much money as someone with a college degree. A study done suggest that people who have a college degree are more likely to get hired because they have an education compared to those who don’t. According to the United States Bureau people who achieved the current degrees earned the following median salaries. People with a doctorate degree earn $100,000 or more. With a bachelor’s degree people earn $58,000 and people with an associates earn $42,000 or more(Lucier). A High School diploma is not worth as much as a college degree. A High school diploma means less today because of the shaping of the world. People who only have a high school diploma earn only about $33,000. These numbers also depend on the type of field that you are going into. For example, people that have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or management will earn a little bit more (Lynn). Getting a college degree can make a huge difference in potential income. That’s compared to people who have gone to college but didn’t get a college degree, the median salary for people who just have a high school degree is even less.
College allows the student to choose their own path in life and not just take any job they can get. For instance, I have always wanted to teach and I like the added perk of having the summers off. Mark Peters and Douglas Belkin propose that the cost of college for someone with a bachelor’s degree is on average 110,000 to 130,000 (1). Why is college education important? College education is important because someone who has graduated and attained a degree will make more money over their life than someone who just has their high school diploma. First, going to college makes someone more hirable. A little more than fifty percent of the United States population makes up the middle class. Although that is true for some, it is not true for all. Some would say that money is not everything, as long as they are happy. While that is true and happiness should hold a great power over people’s lives, for most, college will bring people happiness. There is a great percentage that individuals that attend college will still benefit the same if not more than those that do not attend college. As earlier implied, college is not for everyone and Isabel Sawhill and Stephanie Owen display that well in their essay, “Should Everyone Go to College?.” Owen and Sawhill say that people are actually doing some individuals a disservice by telling them everyone needs to go to college (Page 209, Para 1). In “Should Everyone Go to College?” they say this because they think it is necessary that people think about their likely education path and career path before investing so much money and time into secondary education (Page 212, Para 1). This is true, people should not invest a lot of their self before they have thought about where they want this to lead them. Many people who go to college understand that their earning potential is increased because of their knowledge and experience. Having a higher earning potential is a great benefit because earning more money is something that people love to do. People understand that they will receive a higher salary than those who only have a high school degree throughout their career; this is because going to college helps to further knowledge of a particular area of study that they have chosen and to broaden the mind to be able to improve communication skills.
