My first day at Riverview Psychiatric Center was filled with a mixture of emotions from fear to excitement. This was the first time I had ever set foot into a psychiatric hospital and I had no idea what to expect. My clinical instructor, Nancy Sorman, met with our group and took some time explaining how Riverview was set up, the different units, and the ins and outs of psychiatric nursing. She instantly put me at ease and made me feel like this was going to be a truly magnificent experience.
After orientation, I was assigned to the criminal side of Riverview on Lower Saco. Nancy brought me over and introduced me to the staff on that unit. Reality set in at that point when I realized I was going to be spending time without my classmates and I did get a little nervous at that point. The staff on that unit were exceptional and they made me feel instantly at ease.

It was intimidating and a bit scary, but instinctively I tried to help the patient and his family in any manner I could. As the day progressed, I had less anxiety when administering medications to the patient, and I felt more at ease with checking on the patient and his family to ensure they had no unmet needs. Because of our initial encounter with the doorway assessment, providing patient care was not as frightening as past first days of clinical have been. This resulted in a quite interesting post clinical conference where every student had something interesting to discuss regarding the patients they cared
A registered nurse (RN) is someone that went through a university or college and studied nursing; and then passed the national licensing exam to obtain a license to practice nursing. The degree earned by an RN at the need of the program is deemed a professional nursing degree. The RN top nursing staff and they usually works independently. On the hand, an LPN only earns a practical nursing degree after completion of the program. LPNs are mostly recognized only in USA and Canada; they are also named as License Vocational Nurse (LVN) in the state of California and Texas. LPN work under the supervisor of an RN or a physician.
This past July the Office of Health Promotion at Syracuse University hired Kristelle Asiaka as its first the mental health specialist. Asiaka is currently working on establishing what exactly that means.
“We can’t turn away from a patient’s pain just because it’s difficult” (chapman, 2015, p. 88). I know the path of least resistance is taking a path of ignorance. Easy, is to ignore or neglect the true pain patients experience in times of crisis. As caregivers I believe we all want to heal others or we wouldn’t be in the field of nursing, but there are only handfuls willing to be present during the healing process because sharing one’s pain hurts. As a surgical nurse, I find being genuinely present takes hard work on my behalf, not only mentally but emotionally. On a unit where patient’s needs and conditions are changing at astonishing rates, being present requires mental strength in order slow down enough to recognize the value presence
There are many who believe that the next shortage will be worse and the demand for nurses will increase. There will be more jobs available especially with the baby boomer nurses retiring. Wood believes that when nurses retire, the next shortage could be even worse than the previous shortage. According to Wood this would lead to an “intellectual drain of institutional and professional nursing knowledge” (Wood, 2011, para 15). Staiger agrees as well that a shortage of nurses is expected again when nurses retire and since the economy will be more stable full-time nurses will go back to being part-time (Huston, 2017). Their primary job duty is to provide routine care, observe patients’ health, assist doctors and registered nurses, and communicate instructions to patients regarding medication, home-based care, and preventative lifestyle changes (Hill). Mental Health is one of the most pressing issues facing young people in today’s society and the NHS is failing us. A staggering one in ten children and young people aged five to sixteen are affected by a mental health problem in the UK. This is despite the knowledge and awareness of mental health problems. For this assignment I had the pleasure sitting down with Emily Petermeier and getting an insight on what the real nursing world is like. Emily graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in May 2015, and got a job at Fairview East Bank Hospital. Upon my exit from the Rehab Center, I consider my interaction with the patient who had spin my new world upside down. Thrown completely off guard, I realized two things: sickness can change people into something you, or even they, might not expect, and the second, I don't take things personal. No one wants to be sick or in the hospital by any means, and as a nurse student it is part of my education and professional obligation to hold my anxiety and disappointments of my patient’s odd behavior. Finally I promised to myself to deal with people at their worst, and always have positive attitude toward them and try to heal them back to their best.
I was then introduced to a patient who was in isolation. Her legs were immovable and were crossed in a very uncomfortable position. I wish I could’ve done something so that her legs could be in a more comfortable position, but all I could do was observe and get her a cup of ice cold water to drink. During this clinical observation, I didn’t get to see much but overall, it was a good experience. It made me realize what it was like to be in a hospital setting and what it meant to be a nurse. Seeing how the patients were still able to smile through all the pain they went through, it made me want to become a nurse even more because I would also like to make my patients happy. If I could do one thing differently during this clinical observation, I wish I didn’t ask my senior nurse about what externships she took and instead, I wished I asked her more questions about the patients in order to gain more information about
