The Fourth Lateran Council was the height of the papacy’s attempts to govern the lives of European Christians. This council occurred in 1215 under Pope Innocent III and sought to explicitly state many doctrines of the Church as well as to continue to reform some practices of the Church, and European Christians in general. The council provided rules for what beliefs a good Christian should follow, what beliefs were considered heresy, and what should be done about those who did not practice what was outlined at the Fourth Lateran Council. canon 21 also states that should a person not go along with this doctrine, they would be barred from entering a church within their lifetime, as well as being denied a Christian burial upon their death (RMA, 366). This canon also gives regulations for how confession should be executed. Christians should confess their sins to their own priest, however they can confess to another priest with consent from their own priest. canon 21 also says that priests are not to reveal the sins of any of their congregation. The council laid out new guidelines about how confession and the sacrament of the Eucharist should be performed, dictating religious life for Christians. At the same time, the council also set strict procedures for how marriages should be performed, and where they should be performed. This gave the church control of the personal lives of Christians as well. The church was given power to dictate how Christians should interact with non-Christians, as well as how non-Christians should be in public, by dictating that non-Christians dress differently, and that they not be in public during certain Christian holidays. By laying down guidelines for everything from what religious practices are proper, to marriage, the way that others should dress, and who should hold public office, the Fourth Lateran Council gave the church wide-ranging regulations and reforms allowing them power over the personal and religious lives of Christians and non-Christians
Initiated by Pope Paul III to condemn and refute protestant beliefs, it would eventually lay the principles of catholicism for four centuries. They were able to condemn the reformation by approving the Index of Forbidden Books, which would punish anyone who possessed a list of books that supported Protestantism or were critical of the church in Catholic Countries. The rise of the church had a great impact in medieval society. The great belief of Christianity began with Jesus of Nazareth who presented public preaching’s of a friendly and forgiving God as he claimed he was the Messiah. According to Jesus, god’s command was for all human kind to love, cherish, and focus their lives to the Lord. The love that was expected for humans to have for God was to adore him with all of their hearts, minds, and souls. He also preached to the early people of how one should love one another. A friendly and forgiving God would later attract many sacredly inspired communities to worship him. Only the upper echelon of society were sophisticated enough to understand sermon. This upper crust included the clergy, nun, monks, monarchs, nobles, and the patricians which made up a small portion of the medieval population. The clergy consisted of the Pope (Top), Cardinals (princes of the church and electors of the pope), Bishop (overseers of the dioceses), and Priest (lowest and served at each parish). The clergy were the intermediaries between the laity and God and their most important job was to ensure proper following of the sacraments .

It is clear that between 1540 & 1559 that the Catholic Church became increasingly intolerant of debasement and dissent. This is mostly due to the leaders that came to the papal throne within this period. Nearly 300 years separated Ignatius of Antioch and Augustine of Hippo, during that time a lot changed for Christians in the Roman Empire. To understand the rise of the papacy in Rome, it is imperative to recall that the center of Christianity had been destroyed in 70 AD when the army of Titus destroyed Jerusalem. Looking for leadership, Christians immediately sought out those in Rome as it was the center of power and the capital of the Empire. In the first and second centuries, all roads did indeed lead to Rome. Another reason that Christians looked to Rome for leadership is because they believed that the church would come from Peter. Many understood Jesus’ statement in Matthew 16:18, “You are Peter” to literally mean that the church would form from Peter and he was associated with Rome. Therefore, church leadership would evolve in Rome and its leader would bear the title pope. In the following six centuries a sequence of events would eventually lead the bishop of Rome and the papacy to great spiritual and political power in Western Europe.
