According to a study done at a Long Beach middle school overall school crime decreased by 36% when they enforced a mandatory program. If people did not have to wear school uniforms gang rates may go up, theft rate would be higher and it would help the school see who belongs at school and who doesn’t. Public schools need to be brought back under control by changing the learning system in some of the simplest ways. Today’s schools’ system is not doing as well as before. The crime rate has risen, a significant amount of girls are being sexually harassed, and bulling in schools has gone to a whole other level. With “gangsters” roaming the halls; kids don’t feel safe because they are being harassed. The worst part of the many students is that their discipline is rotten and has got to be rebuilt. This can be avoided by issuing a dress code prohibiting certain types of clothing but still allowing the children the freedom of picking clothes that they want. Uniforms are not practical. They are often old fashioned and uncomfortable to wear. The cheapness is often bad. They over heat when you wear them in the summer and they don’t insulate heat in the winter. There’s no real evidence that proves wearing uniforms will reduce crime in school. But there will be bulling with kids from other schools. Wearing uniforms will show that a student goes to a certain school and will be easy to identify who is “the rival” and bulling or attacks will increase between schools. Dress code can eliminate the “us-and-them” feelings that are made with uniforms. Uniforms are expensive when bought to be customized and is hard for some parents to buy. Uniforms are only produced in small quantities and are made in special shops so the price is usually increased.
School uniforms also reduce ones ability to choose clothing that fits individual comfort needs. Above all, school uniforms even go against the 1st Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, which is about the establishment of religion and free speech. School uniforms are affecting the amount of money spent on clothing in a negative way. Many people think parents/guardians are saving money, but really, they are just spending more money. If one were to think about it, school uniforms can’t be worn outside of school.
In my opinion, I believe that school uniforms bring many benefits for the schools, the parents, and most importantly the children.
School uniforms make students look more formal, and progressively affects a student’s self-esteem, discipline, and safety, and develops students to be more confident of what they can achieve in life. First, uniforms are easier for schools to enforce than non-uniforms. Uniforms help students have fewer penalizing problems and increased attendance than non-uniform schools.
