They say it is where dreams happen. The Walt Disney Company has been nothing, but a growing success. Has grown from something, so little to a growing successes. Disney is known worldwide and by all age groups. Everyone when young can have some type of connection. It could be movies, TV, or even playing with Mickey Mouse. But is it worth investing in and will you gain profit? How will it be in ten years…wouldn’t everyone like a glimpse into the future. Will it help create new jobs or only hurt us in the economy? I picked this investment not from my team but because its brand that many people know about. I regret not investing in the Disney stock because I believe that it could have helped us a lot. Disney in my eyes should be a top investment when it comes to the stock market.

Through this acquisition Disney would get access to key Pixar technologies which would enable it to produce movies at a lower cost and faster than its rivals. This technology transfer would also help revive Disney’s own animation unit. Apart from technology, Disney would also get access to all the Pixar characters, which it could use at its theme parks, merchandise stores and its other related businesses. Pixar’s journey to the top is inspiring. The leap from a dwindling financial future to billions of dollars in profit is a true testament to what can come from perseverance and hard work. This world renowned company has become a house hold name and a major player in the entertainment and business world.
The company that I choose to explore is The Walt Disney Company. Walt Disney started the Disney Brothers studio in 1926, after years of working as a cartoonist. I selected this company due to the fact I am a fan of their products and services. Disney produced some of my favorite films like Aladdin, Hook and The Lion King. After I visited their website, I discovered that Disney owns multiple media outlets, in such areas as film, Internet, music, broadcasting, publishing and recreation. According to Disney’s “The mission of The Walt Disney Company is to be the one of the world’s leading producers and providers of entertainment and information. Using our portfolio of brands to differentiate our content, service and consumer products, we seek to develop the most creative, innovative and profitable entertainment experiences and related products in the world”. The Disney brand is doing exactly what their mission states.
The company know its various revenue generating streams very well. The Disney also sees immense possibility in the sequels of the character based movies. The success of Avengers is a recent example and therefore the company plans a sequel for Captain America 2, Iron Man 3 etc. This will boasts the overall revenue generated by the company. The company is now betting heavily on the introduction of theme parks across the globe especially in emerging markets like China, India, Brazil and Russia (BRIC nations). The growth rate of 10% in theme parks and successful implementation of theme parks in Hong Kong, Japan and France allows the company to develop and construct the Disneyland theme park in Shanghai, China. The presence of 330 million consumers around the Shanghai is yet another key factor that made the Disney to invest approximately $5.5 billion in this park. Without doubt, the market for Disney is growing across the globe and emerging and fast growing economies offers a huge opportunity for the growth and development. Any cartoon, animation, park, or product with Disney’s name attracted to it will automatically increase the popularity of that product. Brand recognition is extremely important to creating a long term company and returning customers. Even though Disney just started out creating animations and movies, they were able to find success in theme parks, cruises and many other areas because of their brand name. Having a reputation can have negative consequences, creating subpar products will impact the brand name, and that is why the quality of Disney’s products is essential to keeping a strong brand
Disney’s long-run success is mainly due to creating value through diversification. Their corporate strategies (primarily under CEO Eisner) include three dimensions: horizontal and geographic expansion as well as vertical integration. Disney is a prime example of how to achieve long-run success through the choices of business, the choice of how many activities to undertake, the choice of how many businesses to be in, the choice of how to manage a portfolio of businesses and the choice of how to create synergies between those businesses (3, p.191-221). All these choices and decisions are made through Disney’s corporate strategies and enabled them to reach long-term success. One will discuss Disney’s long-run success through a general approach. Eisner’s turnaround of the company and his specific implications/strategies will be examined in detail in part II. Disney could reach long-run success mainly through the creation of value due to diversification and the management and fostering of creativity, brand image and synergies between businesses (1, p.11-14).
This case provides a brief history of management conflict and change at Walt Disney Company. Former CEO Michael Eisner was considered to be controversial because of his abrasive style and tendencies toward micromanagement. It was this style that strained several important relationships to the Disney Company. Though his reign as CEO during the 80’s and 90’s helped advance Disney Company, it was his conflicting management style that led to his demise and the beginning of Robert Iger’s epoch at Disney. Since Iger has taken the helm as CEO Disney was ranked 67th in the Fortune 500 list for largest companies, it has become the largest media conglomerate in the world, and relationships and disputes stemming from Eisner have been reconciled.
The Walt Disney Company is known throughout the world as a leader in entertainment. The strategies that the Walt Disney Company have used include competitive advantage, a growth strategy, and a renewal strategy. When a person mentions a theme park, Disney is the first park that comes to mind. They were not the first theme park, but they have mastered the art of creating memories for adults and children alike. As a former employee of Disney I can vouch for the amount of effort that goes into creating memories for families. Disney is a leader when it comes to the theme park business, and other parks look at Disney as a leader. An example of this is that other parks will not raise admission prices, until Disney first raises their prices. WESH.com said "It remains to be seen if Disney's move will trigger a round of similar increases at other Orlando theme parks. Historically, when Disney raises its prices, the other parks follow" (2011, p.1). There is not a company in the world that can provide the "magic" that the Walt Disney World company can provide (Disney.com, 2011).
In conclusion, Disney appears to be a very strong company financially. They do not have any major red flags. Their liquidity ratios and other information does not seem to be alarming in any way. They have been around for many years and are extremely successful, so any obstacle in their way will not be an issue. They will be able to work through it and bounce back from it without a problem.
Mickey is the first thing that comes up to everyone’s head when we hear the word “Disney”. Of course we all have heard of “Disney Land” and “Disney World” or probably have been there on vacation with your family. Or have shopped at their Disney stores before when you were younger. Well, have you ever thought of any possible risks Disney has had or any profit loss they gone through? For being a huge company I believe that they spend a lot of time looking for new things that Disney could change or look at any new improvement they can be involved with. Some risks many companies might deal with can be safety issues, their location spots and nor any profit loss they might struggle with.

Are you for or against Disney? For a majority of Americans this is a no brainer. There answer would be “YES”, because Disney inspired them as a kid, Disney let their imagination be free, or let them dream. Others would not agree, they say “NO” to Disney.
