Telenursing Rising cost of healthcare coupled with strict policies regarding reimbursement to facilities with recent readmissions of patients is causing healthcare to change the way the care for patients. Telenursing is being incorporated throughout facilities in order to improve patient outcomes, increase patient satisfaction, decrease cost, and improve the continuity of care (Hebda & Czar, 2013, p.510). Some question the practice of telenursing is not really nursing, however
Hutcherson (2001) states “They have determined that nursing practice occurs at the point that a nurse utilizes the knowledge, skill, judgment and critical thinking that is inherent in nursing education and that is authorized through the nursing license”.
Interoperability of Systems
Telenursing require the use of technology in order to communicate between the patient and provider. Interoperability refers to the communication between different devices, such as computers, cameras, biometric machines, and electronic health records (EHRs) for the storage and retrieval of patient information (McKeever & Johnson, 2015, p.2). Telenurses may have a more positive outlook on their career knowing they can help patients that have a disadvantage when it comes to healthcare access (Ghai & Kalyan, n.d.). Developing a report with patients leads to a trusting relationship, which can engage the patient to be compliant in their healthcare (Shea & Chamoff, 2012, p.111). Another advantage for patients receiving care via telenursing is patients are able to stay in the comfort of their home remaining as independent as possible (Scullion, 2014,
