Abstract: The purpose of this research is to discover and find out what are the pros and cons that might impact the English language in the social media. For example, people might shorten the word or writ it in a different spelling. Acronyms becomes something that we see in the business communication or work environment. They might also add a new word to the dictionary. In this research, I’m going to make a survey that will be distributed to candidates who are a big fan of using the social media. ‘E-reader’ is a term that has been added to the OED this year, reflecting the rise of products available to read e-books on. ‘OMG’ and ‘LOL’ are widely used acronyms that save time in writing a message. These types of abbreviations have been thought to ‘dumb down’ language and spelling skills. The physical spacing of words have also been shortened, ie from ‘web site’ to ‘website’, reflecting the need to use as few characters as possible within social media updates” [1]. The writer of the article discussed some words that have been added to the Oxford dictionary such as OMG, and LOL. Research Questions: Is there an impact on the English language by the social media? Is it positive or negative impact? Research Methodology: I made a survey that was distributed to participants who are using the social medial in every single day on their life. The survey covered different areas that leaded to have a strong prove if there is an impact or not. I also conducted interviews with candidates who claimed that they are a big fan of using the social media websites. Each interview took me around 15 minutes in order to find out if the candidate’s language has impacted or not. Ethical Considerations: The participants who have been selected to complete the survey are aware that their personal information are not disclose and they have participated in their free will. This is also apply to those who have been chosen to conduct interviews with them, their own data are not reveal. Moreover, before I distributed the survey or conducted the interview, I get a verbal consent from the participant. Determining the effects of text messaging when it comes to college students and their ability to spell, has resulted in a positive nature. Shaw, Carlson, and Waxman (2007), performed a study on eighty-six college students, whom were recruited from a large Midwestern university (p. 58). The authors conducted this research with the intent to prove that the abbreviations and misspellings in text messaging, has begun to lower many college students spelling abilities. Their study resulted in a completely different aspect than was expected, the information gathered did not support the authors hypothesis. Their hypothesis being that, "...spelling ability deteriorates with the frequent use of and exposure to the abbreviated and misspelled words and phrases of text messaging..." (Shaw, Carlson, and Waxman, 2007, p. 60). Although studies show differently, many instructors have complained that students are using misspellings and abbreviations that they normally would use in text messaging, in their academic writings too.
Throughout generations, there have been various ways of communication. From sending letters and important documents by carriers in the 18th century to a more efficient way in the 1900’s contributed by the creation of the internet. As technology improved, new modes of communication were created and the need to socialize increased. Today, social media is used by many people and for different reasons. However, it has reached a point where it has received negative criticism. Social media has clearly impacted and changed society negatively.
