Social media, or web 2.0 began as an Internet based computer application or user-generated application that facilitates the use of social networks by connecting personal or business profiles with those of other individuals or companies. Social media allows people and businesses to share and exchange information, offer ideas, and promote products in virtual communities and networks.
Today, social media consists of many social media platforms all serving similar but slightly different purposes. While some social media platforms are more popular than others, they all serve a purpose and cater to various demographics of people with different interests (Hein 2014, Nicol 2012 & Paus 2013). Facebook also gives persons and businesses the opportunity to create the image of themselves and/or their company that they want people to see. Companies can also build a fan base and often times offer incentives for people to “like” the businesses page.

Cons
Unfortunately there are some dangers with Facebook accounts on both the personal and business level. Personally, persons can acquire unwanted attention and stalking by strangers, acquaintances or “trolls” because of the information posted on Facebook such as phone numbers, place of employment, addresses, and other associations.

YouTube is a great form of personal marketing as many of the video posted on YouTube are posted by video bloggers.

Cons One of the downfalls of using YouTube is that persons cannot always control the videos that are posted.
On a professional level, videos that show inappropriate behavior of employees can be posted with out a person’s consent and as it relates to marketing and business, targeting the exact audience is not as successful on YouTube. There are so many videos of similar ideas and concepts, thus, getting people to watch a specific channel and subscribe to that channel can be difficult if its not a site that will spark an interest (Nicol 202; Luxton, June, & Fairall, 2012).

Social media in marketing is beneficial to any company in that it helps businesses organize control, and streamline communication and information, and help companies to better promote their brand (Paus, 2013, p.77, 78, para. 13).
