For many years people have been reproducing and having babies. Some may wonder why human babies, unlike other species, are so helpless when they are born. This may have to do with the physical and metabolic abilities or limitations of women. Due to physical limitations, a baby can’t, generally, be in the womb for longer than 9 months causing them to have the need of extra time to develop other basic abilities outside of the womb. Experts explain that it is acceptable for humans to take a while to fend for themselves because humans need to acquire certain abilities due to having highly complex brains. It seems like humans' early physical capabilities are behind those of other animals as newborns, in the end, humans' period of relative helplessness has a payoff. …show more content…

For the first two months of life, they can't lift their heads without assistance. They usually roll over for the first time around 4 months and can sit up at around 6 months. Then, babies usually start standing at about 9 months; and take their first steps at around 1 year old. Even when they are this young, they still need to acquire many other abilities necessary to survive. Experts say that this is due to having highly developed minds that are “capable of managing complex reasoning, communication and social interaction, alongside the physical requirements and capabilities of our adult bodies.” When animals give birth to self-sufficient offsprings, it's for several reasons related to both biology and behavior, according to John Dumbacher, a curator of ornithology and mammalogy at the California Academy of Sciences. Some animals need their young to be able to move as soon as possible because the adults are constantly moving and the young need to keep up, or keep away from predators.
