Should Teachers be Armed
Over the years we have heard that a school has been threatened or an intruder has came in and brought danger to the students, as a teacher they are taught to lock the door and hide in the corner thinking that the intruder won’t see them or won’t come in. Students are afraid to go to school,parents are afraid to send their kids to school. We all thought that we didn’t have to worry about going to a place where we thought would be safe and all they had to worry about was what test they have that day or did I remember to do my homework last night. Now we have to worry thinking someone could come into our school and pull a gun, you could lose friends that day or your own life. Ever since the shootings started and became …show more content…

If there was teacher in my school with a gun I would feel protected more but also a little scared because they can act one way around their bosses, or students or student's families but once they leave the school they could act totally different they could be an abuser and one thing could make the teacher lose their cool and take out the gun and either threaten kids or actually use the weapon to harm kids. But on the other hand imagine your a high schooler,middle schooler, or elementary student and you hear your principal come across the announcements saying there's a intruder in the building and all the teachers and student are taught to is to either barricade the door or hide in the corner or if the intruder is not on the same floor as you then run out the door and hope no one is out there waiting for kids to come out. I agree we need to do more than just have locked doors all the time but we need to test the new things and see what students are more comfortable with because no kid wants to be afraid to go to class and be afraid of their teacher pulling a gun on them for saying something or being a different race or voicing an opinion that everyone doesn't agree with. But both pro and cons have good points about how teachers should or shouldn't be armed in schools but we also can’t keep doing the same thing they need to change something to make it more safe for kids to go to

One response to the rise in gun violence in schools is to arm teachers. Even our President has mentioned “giving a bonus” (Davis 2) to teachers that The fact that the idea of arming teachers is even being discussed is disappointing. Bringing more guns into a school is not the answer to gun violence. Most people that defend the idea that guns will “help” keep schools safe have basically three points: (1) teachers will be trained in gun safety, (2) it helps deter potential school shooters, and (3) it will make the students feel more safe. Even though there is some truth to those points, I think that the cons of arming teachers vastly outweigh the pros of arming teachers.

    One reason teachers should not be able to carry guns because guns are currently illegal in schools; Guns are illegal because they are dangerous. The Gun Free School Zone Act (GFSZA) is a federal law that was accepted in the United States in 1990. According to the GFSZA, “It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.” In order for teachers to carry guns, we would have to discard this law. Also, the school board would have to create a new policy, allowing teachers to carry guns. Adjusting the rules would be time consuming and confusing. Changing the GFSZA would make students tense and distract children from learning. Citizens from CNN Politics say, “72.4% of educators said they would be unlikely to bring a firearm to school if allowed to do so.” This data shows that the majority of teachers do not even want possession of a gun in the classroom. School officers have the right to carry guns, teachers should just focus on education. Not only does it create a huge responsibility, there would also need to be a large financial investment to supply guns for every school. This money would be hard to come up with, and not everyone is in favor of sacrificing money for firearms.

    In the last ten years there have been eighteen school shootings in the United States. Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, High Schools, and Universities are all included. From these eighteen shootings there were one hundred and one students and faculty members killed, the majority being students. In the average classroom, there is at least fifteen students to one teacher. One adult is tasked with insuring the safety of fifteen to thirty students. How are teachers expected to accomplish this in the event of a shooting? There are safety codes and drills practiced such as code red, code blue, and evacuation drills that can help keep students safe. In the event of a code red students are to gather in the corner of the room farthest from the door; teachers turn off the lights and lock the door. Some teachers do what they can and barricade the classroom door with desks or filing cabinets… but hiding in a dark room isn 't enough. A code red is called out when an intruder is in the building. The shooter would hear the code red being announced and know the students are hiding, especially if the shooter is a member of the school, then they know exactly what the procedure is. A barricaded door might deter a shooter, but they will most likely move on to the next class-- or they decide that the barricade isn’t going to stop them. In the high school I attend the vast majority of classroom doors are mostly glass; in theory a school shooter can shoot right through without even having to enter the classroom. The best way to protect students is to have a more effective defense against threats.
