Crime and guns. An issue that has politicians arguing and society getting ready for whatever results that follow. Do Guns cause crime, or are the actual people holding them to be put at blame. Restrictions have been implemented but now the uproar that has many people unstill is the ban of firearms.

Taking guns away from common citizens in order to supposedly ensure their safety, one of the other main purposes of the gun control laws is to ensure that guns do not reach the hands of criminals. However, where there is a will there is a way and criminals often see no barriers when acquiring a gun despite the numerous laws preventing their ownership. Such laws are known as Dangerous Possessor Gun Control, which prohibits gun possession for anyone charged or convicted of a crime carrying more than a one-year sentence (Stell). Apparently these laws aren’t doing much good. The typical murderer usually has a prior criminal history of at least 6 years with at least 4 felony arrests before he commits murder (Poe). …show more content…

This was not a new idea, if even then they knew the importance of repressing firearms why would we change that now.

Criminals have many ways to obtain weapons without going through the process mandated by the Brady Bill. Two obvious examples are theft and black market purchases. According to research "only one firearm of every six used in a crime is obtained legally" (Thomas 277). For as long as this country has been around, there have been gun owners, to defend themselves and to hunt for food. Buying, owning, or carrying a handgun doesn't hurt anyone. Until a person commits a crime, he/she is free to choose what he/she wants to do. Even if guns were completely banned from the U.S.A., people would still find a way to get them. Criminals would get guns. They would have their way, and there would be nothing we could do about it. We would have no way to defend ourselves. What is gun control to you? To me, it is the unconstitutional regulation and banning of guns to try to keep the crime rates in this country down. Does it work? Some gun laws are okay and they may work to some extent, but not to the extent that was intended. As for most of these gun laws such as the Brady Law, it serves no purpose. It is only there to make our lawmaking bodies and those of us who are too naive to see the truth feel better. Do you really think that the Brady Law keeps handguns out of the hands of criminals?
