I am not affiliated with any political parties, but in my opinion, females could be successful presidents too. I'm sure that if Hillary Clinton does become the president of the United States, she would be just as successful as like her husband Bill Clinton. The world hasn't had a woman president in any term of presidency, but it doesn't mean that a woman can't be president. However, in order to for the United States to have a good president, the president needs to make wise choices, keep his/her promises, follow the laws and show that people that they're capable to help the world. While this debate has become more publicized since the Bush administration, similar issues of presidential power date back to Truman and the Korean War. A women would make a great president and we need a women president in the United States. Women still don’t get equal pay, and it would be a stepping stone to see a women president. If women can vote for president, there is no reason why they couldn’t be one. Hillary Clinton is apt to be the first women president at this rate. We shouldn’t vote for a president just because of what gender they are. Overall voting for the best candidate is what matters, but eventually a women will be able to take up that presence. Recently the media has an abundance to do with who we vote for. We have never had a woman president, but we will one day. Having a woman president would open more doors, just as Barack Obama has. We haven’t had a woman president in the past because of sexism, intimidation and underestimation.
This all started in the 20th century where women and men didn’t have equal rights. Women were typically stuck in the house taking care of the children and cleaning while the men were out working and providing for the family. When these roles are put on women it shows them as being the weaker of the two. According to Eagly and Karau (2002), women are seen to have “Communal characteristics, which are ascribed more strongly to women, describe primarily a concern with the welfare of other people—for example, affectionate, helpful, kind, sympathetic, interpersonally sensitive, nurturing, and gentle.” (Pg. 574) These characteristics do not seem to qualify with candidacy positions where there needs to be aggressiveness and leadership which is what men’s roles include. The positions in candidacy all require manly type characteristics, so it will be difficult for women to pursue these positions. According to Lawless and Fox (2010), sex continues to play a huge factor in considering candidacy. Women in America think to themselves that since they are women and don’t have the traditional gender roles of men, that it will be unlikely for them to get a solid position in politics. Media representation of what being feminine is can be persuasive and potentially harmful. Femininity and masculinity are spectrums, not categories that people simply fall into. However, this is how a lot of our media, stemming from the cultural norms of American culture, portrays them. They are cut and dry, simple definitions, and easy to recognize. Often times when people hear the word “feminism” they tend to rely on society’s misconstrued definition of what feminism is, the belief of dictatorship, anti-male attitude and female superiority. This misinterpreted definition of feminism is actually completely opposite of what feminism truly is, feminism is defined as “the advocacy of women 's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.” Feminism is essentially equality between the sexes, where neither men nor women are superior to the other. Women’s underrepresentation in politics has been an ongoing issue in the todays world. Feminism is one the main reasons women can get an education. However, with more women likely to be enrolled in college than men, there is still a continued underrepresentation of women in leadership roles throughout the society (McKenna 2007, 7). The inequality has lead women into stepping back and not considering much for themselves. There are many reasons behind the underrepresentation that women hold in politics. Since the early times, women have been told to be stay at home moms, do the cooking, the cleaning, care for the elders and the children. Women are expected to be caring wives and moms, delicate and quiet. They are not seen to be powerful, independent and strong. Women, in today’s society are facing dilemmas in different occupations as they become more suitable for leadership positions. “Traditional definitions of leadership are challenged by the changing demographic of society in the United States, increasing numbers of women in leadership roles in the counseling profession, and shifting expectations in the workplace” (Levitt 66). Although, women status has improved over the past century, they are still lacking access to power and leadership compared to men (Carli & Eagly 629). Furthermore, according to many researchers, women are still underrepresented in the workforce; facing barriers against stereotypes, gender differences and inequality with men.
It is certain that gender inequality exists today, and while there are ideas as to the cause, there is no reason why this gap should continue to go on. The government should take steps to close the gender gap in the workforce. Usually it is indeed females that receive the most inequality but there are cases where men are treated unequally. A woman’s right to equality guarantees that she will be treated fairly in the workplace and that she is respected as having equal value and worth as her male peers. The wage gap has been around since women started working outside the home, and even as more careers become open to women.

Only recently have women started to gain respect as equals and individuals. However, even today they are still looked down upon for their gender.
