Is prostitution one of the world’s oldest professions or one of the world’s oldest crimes? Since the beginning of prostitution to present time, the view of the profession changed from a job to a crime. Nowadays, in most places, people frown upon prostitution. Due to laws and misunderstandings, prostitutes are not seen as victims; instead the law charges them as criminals. Domestic life and criminal activity lead people into the profession of prostitution, where the laws turn them into wrongfully accused victims.
Almost all prostitutes came from broken homes. They were either victims of domestic abuse or rape and sometimes both. “Other times, women enter prostitution because of circumstances in their lives. These women often have little formal education, live in poverty, and have experienced trauma” (“Treat Prostitutes” 2). “While listening or reading their stories people can see the kind of torture they endured from even a young age. “Two-year-old Rebecca, for example, soiled her underwear. As punishment, her mother and her mother’s boyfriend heated cooking oil, he held Rebecca down, and poured it on her legs. Her legs were so badly burned that they became infected, yet Rebecca’s mother did not take her to the hospital until more than a week later…” (Johnson 48-49). Pimps will also use victims to commit crimes so that afterwards they will use that as leverage against them (White 5). Some crimes the traffickers force them to commit are small ones such as theft but sometimes it can worse. "The common denominator of trafficking scenarios is the use of force, fraud, or coercion to exploit a person for profit. A victim can be subjected to labor exploitation, sexual exploitation, or both" (“Human Trafficking” 1).
