The early 20th century was a time of war, genocide, extreme nationalism and growing discomfort within the European population. Understanding why this period was so unstable and volatile is key to developing a deeper understanding of how events like the two World Wars, and the holocaust where able to happen. These events are all closely connected to the way that propaganda is used in the media and in the way that leaders such as Hitler and Stalin where able to take and maintain power over such huge groups of people. Today we understand much more about the horrendous events that these dictators perpetrated and it is hard to comprehend how anyone would have agreed with someone like Hitler of Stalin. What is sometimes misunderstood, is the ways in which people where manipulated. New technologies where developed throughout this time period in order to effectively impose the ideas and beliefs of these dictators upon the general population. WWI was the first time that propaganda was used so effectively to sway public opinion and generate nationalism within various counties such as the USA, Russia and then Germany during WWII and the holocaust. Dictators during the early 20 century, and throughout the course of history have been incredibly effective at exploiting the prejudices of the time to forward their own agendas. It is clear that the most important aspect of this time in history is the newly developed ability to manipulate and sway public opinion with the use of propaganda. He promoted an idealized version of a German man, a united strong Germany, and himself as a powerful leader. All these things where perceived as strength by other countries, and influenced their hesitance to go to war with them, even though the German military could have been defeated if only they had been challenged earlier.
To conclude, in the major events of the early 20th century manipulation of people through propaganda was the most important aspect of the powerful dictators that ruled Europe. We have and will always be persuaded by what we see and hear, the more susceptible we are the less able to think for ourselves we become. Understanding how we are effected by these types of manipulation is important to realize this aspect of history and of our daily lives.
