In research and development project or in any project the most important thing to do is to have a project scope, that is detailed, up to date, signed off, approved by the customer and every one involved in the project decisions. This will avoid any additions; changes or scope creeps in a project. Change request, Change order, Change control, Scope Creep all similar to an addition of a particular component to a project can be a frustrating, and even be a project slayer. This particular component can add labors hours, add cost, affect all the deliverables on any project, as well as create devastation. PMBOK describes it as “The uncontrolled expansion to product or project scope without adjustments to time, cost, and resources is referred to as scope creep.” (PMBOK, p 137) The challenge is not only on the redoing the scope of the project and all it’s boundaries, but how to handle the customer, and how to do the project within the current budget.
