IT Projects starts from a project charter which once created lists projects goals or need or identification of a problem. Next step is project planning where I as Project Manager would work with project team to plan on the next steps for successful delivery and deployment of the project. Once the project is kicked off I would work with the teams as per the project plan to create the deliverables as need be for the project. During the project execution I would also monitor and control the various factors for the project such as project timelines, project financials, scope of work, quality, risk, etc. Once all the different phases of projects are successfully executed and at the end of the project, project closure takes place with alignment to
Every organization has some specific needs depending on their project goals and also they have their own way of doing things. So, the organization should create their own methodologies considering the organization and project goals. The PMBOK® Guide has some standard practices which are followed by project managers. It provides five process groups. They are Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and controlling, Closing (Schwalbe, 2014). Let us look at these five process groups briefly.
Describe what happens in each of the five project management process groups (initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing). Initiating a process is where the project begins. The tasks that are part of the initiation process are to identify and understand the project stakeholders, creating the project charter and holding a kick-off meeting. The project stakeholders are usually the project sponsor, the project team, the support staff and the internal customers.
The projects in today’s world are given a lot of importance and it will continue to grow in the coming years. There are a lot of companies which do not have production, but all of them do have projects. There are a lot of books which have been published on which related to planning and managing the projects. The one of the most important one was published by the author Eli Goldratt in his book ‘Critical chain’. This book basically talks and shows how the application of theory of constraints in the field of project management. The novel is basically based on one of the MBA classes in America where a number of ideas are developed in discussions among the students and the lecturers. The lecturer who teaches project management has a word with one the senior colleagues and project management was the right topic to teach. There were three students who were placed in the project management team of their company which manufactures electronic products. One way to provide clear description of a project is to prepare project charter. A Guide to the Project Management Body Of Knowledge (2008), “it is the process of developing a document that formally authorizes a project or a phase and initial requirements that satisfy the stake holder needs expectations” (pg.71). Preparing a project charter is the initial step for project manager to start any project. In Project charter we can describe different components of the projects. To start any project, preparing a project charter is the initial steps for project manager. Some of the essential components are described below.
The scope of all projects is to deliver specific target and goals in the best possible way. As have been recognized, projects are dynamic and hide lot of risk and a more manageable way of delivering them was needed. The project life cycle is the series of these phases pass from the beginning of a project until it's closure (PMBOK, 2013, p.38). Each of the phases has a specific time and has also a beginning and an end. The standard project has usually four different stages: Initiating, Planning, Implementation and Closure. The project phases took their names from the deliverables of each phase and can be managed as mini projects (Burke, 1999).
The post implementation phase includes all the activities necessary for the project team to bring closure to the project, either upon system acceptance and transfer to its support team, or upon system retirement or replacement.
The topic of my group (group 4) was “How to totally float through your project for free” and the presentation was held by Roger Goodman who works for PMI NZ and Ernst & Young supply chain management with many years of working experience in many different countries such as Saudi Arabia and China.
These groups are classified into six categories, which are initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing. The initiation phase of a project is the first phase in a PLC. This is where the project manager is selected, project vision and concepts are generated and the need for the project is verified (South University Online, 2016, para. 5). The planning phase is the second phase involved in the PLC. This is where approval for project occurs and the planning of the projects scope, schedule, budget, communication plan, and risk plan all begin (South University Online, 2016, para. 6). The execution phase is the third phase of the PLC. During this phase the project is started and is being monitored, controlled and managed (South University Online, 2016, para. 7). The monitoring and controlling occurs during this phase and plays a key role in a successful completion of the project. A project manager must monitor and control risk involved in a project in order to ensure a successful completion (Kerzner, 2013, p.876). Well, the closing phase of the PLC is the final phase. During this phase the project manager along with the project team must determine if the scope of the project has been completed and accepted by the sponsor (South University Online, 2016, para. 8). This also includes the finishing documentation required for the project such as contract closures and publishing a
In contemporary business and science a project is defined as a collaborative enterprise, involving research or design that is carefully planned to achieve a particular aim. When we decide to implement a project, or for that matter, when we decide to do anything in life, whether it is going somewhere, doing something, building something or achieving something, we need to ask ourselves a number of different questions in order to carry out what we are hoping to do, some of these questions may include;
The project appraisal phase includes a decision on the timeline of the project, budget estimation and the expected outcome of the project. It requires the submission of all these in the form of documents to the stakeholders responsible for funding the project. It serves as the basis to the loan agreements for the project
Project management involves all activities that encompass scheduling, planning, and controlling projects. A successful project manager ensure that an organization’s resources are being used both efficiently and effectively. Most projects need to be uniquely developed require a sense of customization and the ability to adapt to any posed challenges. The scope of effective project management includes defining what the project is and what is being expected to be accomplished. Projects are imposed to fulfill a certain need and project managers must have the ability to create the proper definition. Goals and the means used to attain those goals have to be clearly stated. Project Managers must also have the ability to plan
When planning a new project, how the project will be managed is one of the most important factors. The importance of a managers will determine the success of the project. The success of the project will be determined by how well it is managed. Project management is referred to as the discipline that entails the processes of carefully planning, organizing, controlling, and motivating the organization resources so as to foster and facilitate the achievement of specific established and desired goals and meet the specific criteria of success required in the organization (Larson, 2014). Over the course of this paper I will be discussing and analyzing the importance of project management.
“Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to organisational and project activities to achieve the aims of an organisation through projects” (PMI, 2003).
