The fields of psychology and psychiatry are highly integrated. As a former pre-medical psychology student, I should know. At the beginning of this semester, I wanted to go into the field of psychiatry, to become a doctor who prescribes medication to her patients in order to relieve the patients’ symptoms of anxiety and depression, and numerous other disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, about halfway through this semester, I dropped the pre-med option and decided to stick with my degree in psychology, going back to my original plan of becoming a psychologist. I have planned on becoming one since I was a sophomore in high school. Changing my plan didn’t sit well with me after all of the excitement and awe of becoming a psychiatrist had worn off. Despite the $180,000 per year paycheck, I wasn’t my passion or my dream, so I decided to switch back.
In order to become a psychologist, one must attend graduate school after receiving a Bachelor’s degree. Most graduate schools are highly competitive and difficult to get into. Many Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs only accept four to five candidates per year. However, many for-profit professional schools have Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) programs that allow up to two hundred doctoral candidates in per year. Because of this reason, Psy.D. programs are much easier to get into. However, not all Psy.D. programs are this way. In fact, Baylor only accepted six candidates into their Psy.D. program for the 2012-2013 school year (Baylor University, 2014).
Regardless of the similarities between the fields—that is, the mental health fields—there are differences as well. As I stated above, psychiatrists are medical doctors who are able to prescribe medication to ...

Autogenic training is a method of stress reduction developed in the early 20th century by physiologist Oskar Vogt. While working with a group of hypnotic subjects, Vogt realized that when they went into a hypnotic state, they had a significant decrease in tension, fatigue and headaches. Inspired by this newfound information, a psychiatrist named Johannes Schultz decided to expand Vogt’s research in order to learn more about the workings of autogenics (Olipin & Hesson, 2010). Schultz was able to discover that through self-directed hypnosis, subjects were able to experience sensations of heaviness and warmth, primarily through their arms and legs. From these observations, “Shultz developed a system designed t...

Psychiatrists are physicians who help patients with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of any mental disorder. Psychiatrists can treat patients with a range of disorders from mild anxiety, to people with severe disorders that can cause dangerous behavior to anyone with a mental retardation, to anyone also suffering with alcoholism. Psychiatrists can also prescribe drugs to their patients because they are physicians. They undergo many years of training to be able to recognize the connection between mental disorders and physical disorders. Psychiatrists can work with their patients in their own private offices or in hospitals and clinics. Psychiatrists can also teach in medical school or research and study the causes and treatments ...
Ever since I was a child, I was entranced with psychology, but only saw it as a hobby. Now, my interest is in behavior and forensic psychology. The way people behave is fascinating for me to learn about, and any classes that I can take now that would help me in the future are always welcome. Psychology has always interesting to me, but I did not know what exactly it was until seventh grade when one of my friends told me how they had a therapist for her depression. At first, I thought that therapists only listened to people’s problems and then magically solved them, but I soon learned that that wasn’t the case. There were ups and downs with my friend, and she never really got ‘better’ in the sense of her being back to her old self, but therapy did help. When I saw her process, I was intrigued. I always knew that I wanted to help people, but knew no other way than community service. It was through my friend that I finally figured out the answer to what I wanted to do with my

(“A graduate degree is a must for every psychologist; a bachelor’s degree in a particular field of expertise to be precise is mandatory. People who want to become school psychologists have to earn special degrees by completing three years of graduate school and a one year internship”).
The purpose of Motor Learning is to establish the fundamentals of movement so motor skill and motor control can be sufficiently achieved. This subdiscipline also looks at individual differences of behavior to investigate how it affects motor skill and motor control. Relating to individual differences, Sociology examines age, race, ethnicity, gender, among others to see if these factors have any influence on physical activity. Ultimately, the subdiscipline of Psychology explores emotions, behaviors, and cognitions that individuals experience during physical activity. The purpose of Psychology is to determine how emotions can impact performance of physical activity. With an overview of each subdiscipline given, the specific subdiscipline I will be analyzing throughout this essay is Exercise Physiology. I chose this subdiscipline to explain my current topic because I want to know if following a vegetarian diet enhances physical performance. To research this idea, I need to know what physiological responses are occurring in the human body while exercising on a vegetarian diet, if following this lifestyle will prevent cancers and diseases, and if it will improve health and
I have known that I wanted to go into the field of Social Work since my first year of undergraduate studies at SUNY at Fredonia. I entered SUNY at Fredonia as a major in secondary education, with a concentration in English. It was during my first semester of my freshman year that I had taken an introductory course in psychology. I realized then that I wanted to work with people, but not in the capacity as a secondary education teacher, but in a career in mental health. My professor spoke with such enthusiasm about the subject of psychology and psychopathology and soon, I found myself intrigued with these subjects. I wanted to help individuals who needed the help, especially knowing the stigma mentally illness exists in society.

There are hundreds of different careers in the medical field ranging from neurosurgeons to nurse practitioners. Psychiatry deals specifically with the diagnosis and treatment of mental, behavioral, and emotional ailments. The main purpose of a psychiatrist is to help people coop with issues and stress in their environment that make it difficult to lead a normal and healthy lifestyle. These issues may arise from abuse, addiction, mental disability, disease, or physical injury. It is the psychiatrist’s job to ensure the patient can maintain a healthy attitude and continue to provide for themselves. A Psychiatrist may choose to specialize in many sub classes of mental health including children and adolescents, geriatric psychiatry, addiction, and pain management. While requiring an intense and difficult education, the occupation in psychiatry is one that offers meaningful, fulfilling work and a high-end salary.
In this psychology class, I have learned about the different types of psychology. Before this class I always thought psychology was only the study of emotions. Later in the class I learned00 that psychology can be the study of the brain, emotions, disorders, and many others. Since I took this class I don’t understand how many people can get a psychologist and psychiatrist confused. A psychologist can have a Ph.D. or a Ed.D. A psychologists can be broken down into two categories such as research and clinical. Research psychologists study human behavior and could work for a wider range of employers. A clinical psychologist may work with patients who are mentally or emotionally disturbed. A psychiatrist is basically someone that is a doctor, they
