The Progressive Era was a significant time period between 1890 and 1920. During this time many people in the United States believed that an active government could improve the conditions of the society. Progressivism was not a political party, but rather a movement of people who wanted to impose order and justice. According to the website digitalhistory.com, “Progressivism is an umbrella label for a wide range of economic, political, social, and moral reforms.” Progressivism had a significant influence on the Unites States and led to many changes. What caused the dilemma? The issues that caused progressivism were pretty wide ranging, but in general it can be said that people became more aware of the social, political, and economic issues in the United States. They realized that the growing industrialization and urbanization had not only benefits, but also its disadvantages for the society as a whole. The 17th Amendment was also passed in 1913 and allowed people to elect the United States senators. Before that point in time, the senators were always elected by the state legislatures as stated by the website ehow.com. These outcomes mentioned above are just a few of the accomplishments of the progressive movement during the nineteenth hundreds. As it can be seen the progressive movement had an immense impact on the US in the nineteen hundreds and its outcomes still affect the US today. Maybe not so much the Eighteenth Amendment because it was later replaced by the Twenty-first Amendment which repealed the prohibition, but the Twenty-first Amendment still influences the US today. The right for women to vote truly reshaped the role of women in our society. In the nineteenth hundreds many people still believed that the role of women was the one of a housewife and mother. There were major gender differences and women had to face many inequalities compared to men. Women’s suffrage movement changed these inequalities and provided us with a new role of women. Of course, also the eight-hour working day, child labor, safe working conditions, and food and drug safety still play a huge role in our lives today.
