Professionalism, Let It Shine!

Professionalism by definition is the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Professionalism incorporates several different things. It means you have to be knowledgeable in your profession, be responsible, trustworthy, reliable, respectful, and willing to accept responsibility for your actions. You need to take credit when credit is due but remember to give credit where it is due as well. Being a professional, you should always strive for excellence and seek ways to improve not only yourself but others around you. Be productive and communicate well with others. Share your knowledge and skills with others, and last but not least, a very important part of professionalism is to always follow through on what you say you will do.
Regardless of the industry you work in, all jobs have one common trend, in order to be successful and advance you must exhibit professionalism. According to allheathcare.com, there are ten qualities that a healthcare professional must have to be considered professional: communication skills, emotional stability, empathy, flexibility, good attention to detail, interpersonal skills, physical endurance, problem solving skills, quick response, and respect (Monster Career, n.d.). In addition to these mentioned qualities, being competent in your job, being able to seek out information, the willingness to learn, and honesty are a few others. The qualities for being professional are similar for most industries but do vary slightly.
