The word “professionalism” to me means being well groomed, have a positive attitude, the skill or being competent at doing your job, having compassion for your patients, and having honor, courage and commitment. Being well groomed when coming to the workplace means your uniform is pressed, your nails are trimmed, your teeth are brushed, and you don’t have body odor. That is the first thing that people notice about you as a professional is how well you’re groomed. A positive attitude is key in the nursing field. If you are always coming to work with a negative attitude, your coworkers are not going to want to work with you, and your patients are not going to want to open up to you when you ask questions. Being competent at your job means you are always learning. As a nurse, you have to be willing to learn new information as you progress in the nursing profession. If you lack compassion in the nursing profession there are not going to be many patients that want to be seen by you. If a patient is telling you their personal information don’t make what they say about yourself. Tell them you are here to take care of them and will be willing to help them in any situation. Honor, courage and commitment is a high priority when it comes down to talking about professionalism. Honor means having integrity. If you do something wrong or skip a step don’t hide it. Tell someone so that mistake can be fixed. Courage is taking that step and telling the doctor you messed up when giving medication to their patient. Commitment means being there for your patients. Don’t expect to come to work and only do half of your job so your coworkers have to finish your job for
