What Is Professionalism In The Physical Therapy Field?

While it is tempting to analyze professionalism in a trite manner, I often find myself explaining professionalism in terms which I believe fits best and sits closest to my heart: orchestration. When professionalism comes to mind, the intricacies of orchestra corresponds constructively to the meaning of this. Yes, professionalism in the physical therapy field simply encompasses patience, knowledge, and empathy for the patient, but there is so much more to it that can be fittingly described through elements of orchestration. When I think of professionalism in the Physical Therapy field, I think of the power of the conductor to create harmony, abate dissonance, and improve balance throughout the journey of rehabilitation.

The most significant part of any orchestra is the ability for the conductor to be able to understand nonverbal signs to communicate with his or her orchestra. By paying close attention to details, a conductor understands when an orchestra is becoming offbeat, starts to rush through an arrangement, or not performing an arrangement with passion. Likewise, a physical therapist must be able to pick up the nonverbal cues from their patients like a conductor. For example, if a patient is struggling with an exercise or finding a certain movement more difficult than before, a physical therapist must be able to analyze the nonverbal cues to be able to adjust a rehabilitation plan accordingly.

When I think of professionalism in the physical therapy field, I cannot help to tie in the intricacies of orchestration. As I begin my path toward the healthcare field, not only do I wish to bring in the trite qualities of professionalism but also the qualities of orchestration that transcend the norm. I hope that one day I can step into the role of the conductor of an ensemble, to be able to transcend professionalism and invoke power into my patients through their journey of
