As a student studying physical therapy, it is important to practice professionalism, while understanding that you are not yet a professional. There are many attributes that one should have in order to be considered professional. The key attributes of professionalism that I aspire to practice as both a graduate student and professional are exhibiting emotional intelligence, obtaining and maintaining competency in the field, demonstrating accountability, engaging in active listening, and presenting oneself in a professional manner. Ethics, or ethical behavior, is a large part of being professional. As a student and future professional in the physical therapy field, there are many rules and standards that need to be followed. I believe this is the most important skill to have in any professional setting. If you can master having a high emotional intelligence, you will be able to do your job to your highest ability. Even on a difficult day, you must put your our patients first. In my experience as a student and an employee in physical therapy I have seen both sides of the spectrum. I was amazed and sympathetic to hear the pain one of the physical therapists had been in from multiple herniated discs in her back over the past few months when I was doing my internship. She was always a positive presence in the clinic and cared for her patients despite her current situation. She is a good example of creating a positive environment in the clinic and for the patients. Having a high emotional intelligence will help me develop good professional relationships throughout my experiences. I believe that this ability cuts across many of the behaviors required to exhibit
