Professional Code of Ethics A code of ethics establishes how professionals theoretical approach problems based upon the ethical principles of the organizations core values and standards to which the professional will be held. Most organizations have some types of code of ethics. Personal ethics are quite different from professional ethics. Personal ethics refers to the ethics that a person may identify with in respect to people and situations that they deal with in everyday life, however professional ethics refers to the ethics that a person must adhere to in their interaction and business dealings in their professional life regardless of personal feelings. Professional ethics are important in health care as with other organizations that service the needs of individuals. Each organizations set principles that govern the behavior, how a professional should act toward clients and other institutions. American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Code of Ethics incorporates standards of ethical behavior governing individual behavior particular the conduct directly related to the role and identity of the health care executive. The overall objective is to create a more equitable, accessible, effective, and efficient healthcare system. These objectives are to maintain or enhance the quality of life, dignity, and well-being of every individual needing healthcare services. Every management decision made affects the health and well-being of both the individual and communities. For a new substance abuse counselor it can be difficult to recognize an ethical dilemma. Not that substance abuse counselor’s are ignorant, but most counselors are oblivious to the fact that everything an individual does, has an ethical dimension. Discovering if the dimension is ethical or unethical is a dilemma the substance abuse counselor may have. To help counselors make a decision when faced with an ethical or legal situation, and determine if there is an ethical dilemma the counselor should follow the guidelines that have been put into place for ethical decision-making. For a counselor to recognizes there is an ethical dilemma they should first take the current situation and consider all ethical and legal issues involved and be sensitive to the ethical dilemma at hand. A counselor is not born with sensitivity therefore; it takes time for the mind to develop ethical sensitivity. If a counselor is unable to develop ethical sensitivity, they run the risk of coming to an unethical conclusion in as much, risking their client’s welfare.
