Amongst the various professional certifications available in the field of healthcare management and administration, the one that allures me is Certified Medical Manager (CMM). It is the only nationally accredited professional certificate pertaining to medical office/practice management. Also, it is recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. According to Professional Association of Health Care Office Management (PAHCOM), the mission of CMM certification is “to provide medical managers with documentation of their competency in the administrative management of medical practices.” It is not only an entry-level certification, but it also requires having experience and education. The basic qualification to obtain this certification includes possessing 12 post-secondary education credits related to healthcare/medical administration or management and a minimum of 2 years of experience in healthcare field supporting the patient care. This certification validates and recognizes the knowledge and abilities required to manage physician practices and ambulatory service centers in an increasingly complex environment (Certification, 2018). I certainly believe that this professional certification can add an incredible value to my career by enhancing my performance, improving my earning potential and above all, by providing a competitive advantage with current and prospective employers. While working seemingly endless days, many nurses do not realize the many influences that affect their professional practice or how client care is delivered. Besides their employer, health care organizations are highly regulated by federal, state, and local laws and regulations. In addition to the rules set by governments, most medical establishments want to be accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC), a non-government regulatory agency. TJC does not have the authority to cite or fine a facility for not meeting standards or responding to its custodian alerts (The Joint Commission, 2011). However, these standards carry considerable weight through the loss of millions of dollars from Medicare and Medicaid programs.
All in all, I believe that I have gained many skills throughout my time with my employer. I hope that once I do receive my degree healthcare management, I can apply even more skills to everyday challenges that may arise. In a field that’s growing rapidly, one can be assured that conflicts will always happen, and people will not always work together. With several team building activities, a higher employee morale can be achieved.
Healthcare is intriguing. The health and wellness of people always has been intriguing and always will be. My background in healthcare came as an environmental pass down with a father as a Registered Nurse and a mother in healthcare management. It was inevitable that the journey of healthcare started being instilled without my knowledge of it, as a young child. A constant learning in the health sciences and management directed my way. By the start of college, the intrigue lead to compassion, lighting a fire for the administration of healthcare. This calling spurred by a great woman, my mother, who is a national redesign award winner by the Bureau of Primary Healthcare in Health Disparities. These footsteps down her similar path with careful guidance, but not to be confused with an easy path.
