In this day and age there are so many different athletes, from all different walks in life. And the importance of those backgrounds can be seen in the way these athletes play. Whether you come from a wealthy family, or from the streets of a big city, the chance of making the league is the same. The real trial that a lot of these athletes face is the problem of having only one parent or even no parents. Nonetheless, young athletes who grow up with only one parent or no parents can be just as successful if not more successful than those that grew up with both parents. When talking about athletes who grew up in single parent homes comes up some of the biggest names in sports come to mind. Players like Larry Bird, Kevin Durant, Lance Armstrong and others came from wealthy single homes. Where in other players like Lebron James, Shaquille O’Neil, Mike Tyson, and Luis Suarez grew up in much less fortunate circumstances financially, but still all share the same unfortunate circumstance of not having two parents in their lives. What do all these things have in common? They can all be amazing role models. But what can a young man do if he doesn’t have a good role model in his life? He can be led down paths he shouldn't take and do thing he shouldn't do. There are so many things that are now so readily accessible to youth these days, such as drugs, alcohol, and steriods. All these things and others can be so physically and mentally damaging to these young athletes. Though there are many that can take these things and not be totally affected. But then there are others that can be affected so heavily, and can lose much of their athletic talent due to it. On the other side it can be a great push for athletes.
