Back at it Again with Procrastination Everyone knows the feeling of not wanting to do something, whether it is chores when people are young or school work in high school and college. Procrastination is defined as the action of delaying or postponing something. It can be a daily struggle for some people who really just want to have fun and hang out with their friends rather than do their homework. It all depends on what they think is more important when they take the time and think about their decisions. Yusuf Levent SAHIN, a professor at Anadolu University in the department of Computer Education and Instructional Technologies, states, “According to Ouwuegbuzie, approximately 40% of college students demonstrate the delaying behavior when they need to prepare term papers and study for the exams” (SAHIN). Every student has procrastinated on homework assignments, but every student should focus on overcoming procrastination because doing so will help reduce stress, help improve time management skills and encourages students to move forward and accomplish their goals even though some say procrastination is unavoidable. They gave reasons in the beginning on why they didn’t do it then. Bernard Roth, author of Achievement Habit and engineering professor at Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, wrote “We need reasons so we appear reasonable, but we don’t take full responsibility for our behavior” (Roth 41). Sometimes, trying to accomplish these goals ends up meaning giving up the things that are fun a lot of the time. There are a lot of people that have different views on why they procrastinate and how they deal with it. Students however need to really start thinking about not procrastinating their work. It would help save them from the stress that rushing to get the assignment done the night before would bring. As Bernard Roth says “There is a big difference between trying to do something and actually doing it” (Roth 105). Students should really think about overcoming procrastination because it would help with stress, improve time management skills and help students accomplish their goals and be successful in the future.
