In the United States, 38% of all fires are structure fires that take place inside of buildings. The most fatal type of fire are home fires, which account for 84% of all deaths as a result of a fire. If your home has multiple stories, it is vital that you have a safe way out of every level in your home. If you don't have a safe way out of the upper levels of your home, contact a local contractor and see about having a fire escape installed that you can access through at least one room on every level. If you have multiple rooms in the upper levels in your home, you may want to consider installing multiple fire escapes.

Fire safety education is a crucial aspect of fire prevention. The general public needs to know how big of a threat fire is to them and how they can do things in their everyday lives to improve their safety, as well as preventing the threat of fire to begin with. There are many problems in today’s society. Some of the problems most people would not even consider or notice until they are staring them in the face. For example, I have noticed a few problems right here on campus. When it rains, snows, sleets, or storms we have no shelter while we are waiting at the traffic lights or walking across campus to go to our classes. After walking around in the rain all day, trying to make it to classes on time, we end up sick and have to miss school. I know of many students with similar complaints. If it is raining, snowing, sleeting, or storming why is it so hard for the little buggies, that they have going around campus all the time, shuttle people around or put up a shelter. There are various ways which one can space heat their house. The most common way is to use a furnace, however, stoves, fireplaces, electric resistance heaters and electrically powered heat pumps can also be used to heat the house. Furnaces run mostly off natural gas and tend to be around 60-90% efficient. Older units can be as low as 50% efficient. Electric resistance heaters are usually around 100% efficient at producing heat. However, this statistic is slightly misleading when thinking about total efficiency because you must account for the electric energy being consumed by the heater. Power plants are only able to produce electric energy from natural gas at about 35% efficiency. Consequently, electricity is more expensive than natural gas to produce, making electric resistance heaters more expensive to operate. This energy cost must also be accounted for when adding up the total cost of electric resistance heating.
