Working with the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon services I gain an abundant of information on how to be successful in such a career. I also learned many ways in offenders fail to be successful at completing probation overall, whether it be violating general conditions of probation or special conditions of probation. One of the main ways in which I observed many offenders failed at, is being up to date with payments due to restitution owed to the victim, the court, their GPS device, or fees in general. Many of the offenders who were in arrears of such finical obligations, often were obligated to go before an administrative hearing officer, or worse, go before a judge in a general sessions hearing. Many offenders fail to release what this truly means, because it is simply ambiguous. This is ambiguous in the sense that, if you can’t afford an attorney, it would seem that the court giving you one would be free. It would also hold that you absolutely need an attorney. The average person is not capable of representing themselves in a prestigious system such as the criminal system. The same holds for pleading to probation without anyone informing the offender of what being probation truly means, such as the limitations that will be placed on them, or the rights that the constitution grants citizens, that will be lost. One of the many misconceptions of offenders being granted probation is that they keep their freedom. Freedom to many mean different things. If offenders knew that being on probation did not mean being free, due to finical obligations and other conditions, one could say that many would choose to go to the penitentiary
