A wise man by the name of Michael Kimmel once said, “the privilege of privilege is that the terms of privilege are rendered invisible. It is a luxury not to have to think about race, or class, or gender. Only those marginalized by some category understand how powerful that category is when deployed against them.” Privilege is an ‘invisible package of unearned assets’ that a particular person or group is granted. This quote truly gives a true exposed, meaning of privilege and explains the depths of what it really means to be privileged or have privileges. Personally, I consider myself privileged. Often, society associates money with power and those who have it are seen as more successful and fall under the assumed norm in the system of oppression. Being born into the middle-upper class, I am granted further opportunities for instance, college that someone who is in the working class may not be able to financially support. People who are disabled are often marginalized because some believe they are different and that they do not possess the capabilities to take care of themselves or require extra help to complete tasks that someone who is able-bodied may …show more content…

One characteristic is that I am a female. Because the assume norm is a white male who is able-bodied and falls under the middle-upper class status, being a female would categorize me to fall under gender oppression. For starters, derogatory vocabulary is used toward a promiscuous woman in a very negative way when the same exact vocabulary can be used towards a male and he is praised for his actions. Also, some women are still victims to the stereotype that they should cook, clean and raise the family while their significant other makes money to support the household. Other factors such as income, strength and ability leave women to feel inferior to the male population. In many ways I am privileged, but in certain situations I do fall under gender
