Did you know that the first private investigation agency was started by a criminal? While conducting research over this particular topic I learned a lot of interesting information regarding the type of work done by private investigators, as well as the potential employment opportunities. This world is a crazy and deceptive place and it is up to us to get to the truth of everything. Becoming a private investigator will be a time consuming, potentially dangerous, yet extremely rewarding career path. (History of Private Investigations, 2013)
The opening sentence is true. The first private detective agency was created by a French soldier and criminal in 1833. His name was Eugene Francois Vidocq. The name of his agency was Le bureau des reseignments, (Office of Intelligence.) His office was fully staffed with other ex-cons. His firm was the first to do a plaster cast of a shoe impression. Police often attempted to shut his company down with no avail. He was arrested in 1842 in what he believed to be a set up after solving an embezzlement case. The charges were false imprisonment and taking money under false pretenses. Vidocq was sentenced to five years in prison and a 3,000-franc fine. He was released after he took his case to the Court of Appeals. (History of Private Investigations, 2013)
Vidocq is credited also with introducing many key tasks into the Criminal Investigations field. These important tasks include record-keeping, criminology and ballistics. He also had a printing company where he is believed to have created indelible ink and unaltered bond paper. Many of Vidocq’s methods are still used today by French authorities. Originally assigned the Federal Bureau of Investigations Field Office in Alexandria, Virginia, Earl Edwin Pitts investigated narcotics and small white collar crimes. Before long Earl Edwin Pitts was assigned to work as a member of a foreign Counter-Intelligence squad in New York City however, the transition to his new location was not easy and things went badly. The case of Joseph Vacher was as well-known, more deadly, and even compared to, the murders committed by “Jack the Ripper” so much so that Vacher even screamed that he was “Joseph the Ripper”. This murder, whose identity was unknown at the time, left a trail of terror where ever he went, his capture became a career making opportunity for the investigating magistrates. After Vacher was captured a new branch of criminal interrogation was used to try to incriminate him in the murders that it was believed he had done. The major breakthrough in criminology came in the form of the methods that lead to his capture and identification.

During the 20th century, there were many outlaws and crimes that made history and left their mark on society. The murder of Quebec prison guard Dianne Lavigne , in Montreal, by Hells Angels members Stephane “Godass” Gagne and Andre “Touts” Tousignant under the orders of Maurice “Mom” Boucher was one of these exact instances. Based on the Hells Angels attempt to destabilize the justice system, her assassination and that of Pierre Rondeau not long after were committed in 1997. As will become evident, the murder of Dianne Lavigne resulted in the incarceration of those who were responsible, the police repression of biker activity, and the revulsion of the public while generating fear within the judicial system.

One of the first attempts at law enforcement began in 1692, an act known as the highway act was taking place. The highway act provided rewards to anyone who captured a criminal. In the 1600’s, crime spreads through city of England. There was a group of investigators called the “Bow Street Runners” and they went to major crime scenes to see if they could figure out what happened. With the success of the Bow Street Runners, the government started paying people to be law enforcers. (2)
