The “right to privacy” and the “right to be forgotten” are both what most people think of has a something that they must have, such as the “right of freedom” or the “right to bear arms”. However, that does not apply to everyone like criminals, politicians and everyday people who all posts things on the internet or someone during for them. Even if some else post their information without their knowledge. People tend to forget the internet is a public domain where anyone can post information about them self or other people even if it not morally right. However, the internet in a tool for sharing information and access that information for whatever people need. I, personally, think that for every day people who have a problem with the information that is out on the web they should rethink things that they posted and should learn a lesson how the real world works and thinks by not being able to have the right to be forgotten or have an access to a tool where they can erase information that they put online in order for to be more in inclined on what kinds of information that they want society to see and know.

What is privacy? Well, it’s the state or condition of being free from being observed or disturbed by other people. In terms of information, it is the right to have some control over how one’s own personal information is collected and used. This is a right that has been inherently protected by the U.S Constitution, agreed upon by the Supreme Court, and yet, issues around this very topic arise every day. In The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the author Rebecca Skloot, addresses this issue in her story of the women behind the infamous HeLa cells. Her story shows that although privacy is a right that is inherently protected by the law, situations of injustice can still occur. Examples of this in the book include when Henrietta’s cells were given to Dr. Gey without any consent from Day, the situation in which Mr. Golde’s spleen was sold without his permission, as well as when the Lacks family were recontacted and mislead about the reasons they were tested years after Henrietta’s death.

Every American citizen has the right to privacy whether it be privacy in their homes, the words in their emails, or daily activities. But not only do the American people have the right to privacy from other citizens, we also have the right to privacy from the government. If the government can keep their conversations, actions and secrets under lock and key then Americans can as well. But unfortunately, the Constitution does not explicitly say anything about “privacy” for the American people, it is left for open interpretation in multiple amendments.
