A ''running back'' (RB) is the position of a player on an American football team who usually lines up in the Offensive backfield. The primary roles of a running backs are to receive handoffs from the quarterback for a rushing play, to catch passes from out of the backfield, and to block. Some athletic traits that a running back will need are Speed, Power, Endurance, Strength and Agility. In football speed over a short distance is very important, running backs need quick feet to help them make short moves laterally, on an angle and forward and backward.
