WHO Analysis: Prevention and treatment of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia
In completing the assignment for WHO analysis, required for Community and Global Health, examination of the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for the Prevention and treatment of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia has occurred. According to the guidelines, hypertensive disorders in pregnancy are prevalent and carry a high rate of morbidity. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effectiveness and plausibility of the WHO guidelines, which this author believes are effective, however the ability to enact the guidelines in developing countries, regardless of the lives saved, seems feeble at best.
Background
Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are disorders of pregnancy. Both disorders are prevalent around the world. According to the Pre-eclampsia Foundation roughly 5-8% of pregnancies result in some form of gestational hypertension, with greater than 6.6 million females around the world ending up with the condition. If untreated pre-eclampsia can lead to eclampsia, which is a life threatening and emergent condition for mother and fetus.
Pre-eclampsia is a condition related to hypertension in pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia defined as “a multiorgan disease, characterized by hypertension and proteinuria, in the parturient after 20 weeks’ gestation. Although edema is no longer required for diagnosis, it is frequently present. Preeclampsia is considered to be severe when BP is greater than 160 mm Hg systolic and 110 mm Hg diastolic, proteinuria is greater than 5 g, or signs and symptoms are consistent with end organ damage.” (Cunningham, Rivera, & Spence, 2011) Symptoms that may reveal end organ damage according to Cunningham et al may include neurological changes, impairment...

radicals leads to oxidative damage. Subsequently, it has been implicated in the progression of several diseases like cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological disease, pulmonary disease, rheumatoid arthritis, nephropathy, ocular disease and pre-eclampsia. The antioxidant defense system within the body may confer protection to oxidative damage by scavenging free radicals. Antioxidants also may be obtained from dietary sources/ supplements. The efficacy of antioxidant intake on initiation and progression
medicine especially when it concerns the fetus. Research is being done in the field of fetal gene and stem cell therapy in hopes of providing early treatment for genetic disorders (Abi-Nader et.al, 2009). Research is also been done for open fetal surgery for the correction of birth defects like congenital heart disease, and the prevention of pre-eclampsia. A lot of pregnancies have led to maternal mortality and maternal morbidity. This area of concern is often situated with MFM subspecialists, in order

process speaks for itself and its benefits to humans. The potential benefits come with the prevention of some disorders and diseases. The right amounts can help to prevent such things as kidney stones, osteoporosis and migraines, of course it is not just limited to these 3 disorders. Magnesium can also be used as a pain relief in some cases. For example, a trial was done to study the effects of different treatments for dysmenorrhoea, where placebo was compared to magnesium. Magnesium was eventually found
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every eight babies each year in the United States is born premature. This affects approximately 500,000 babies yearly. Premature babies are defined as babies born more than three weeks before the baby’s due date.
