I would like to be a part of the Presidential Honors Scholars Program because I value academic motivation, community, and personal success, and I know that this program will help me attain my goals with these values in mind. With the expectations the program requires of its students, I know that I will have the motivation to excel and prosper throughout my remaining years of college. I spent many of my days attending Chemistry roundtables and PTEs for Biology and Chemistry. Being surrounded by intelligent people discussing either their research projects or going in depth about something I learned in class that day was truly inspiring. The Presidential Honors Scholars Program offers opportunities that will help in my pursuit for graduate school, such as the DURF grant, the senior thesis, and the research presentation to the Undergraduate Research Conference. As a student at Northvale Public School, I have grown up with my older siblings being inducted into an organization called the National Junior Honor Society. I had seen all the hard work and dedication they put into their school work and activities just to get into this society, making me want to be just like them. Then a few weeks ago, I found a note on my desk in homeroom telling me that I had been nominated to be apart of this society. Through citizenship and character, leadership, and service, I intend on being inducted into the society I have heard so much about. Though it will take a lot of effort this school year, being a part of this society is a dream of mine that I will make sure to come true.

As a laboratory prep, I was able to set up labs for freshmen and sophomore biology classes. Also, I made visits to my professor’s labs to observe the procedures graduate students used for their experiments and I loved it. After completion of my freshman year, I participated in the “Maternal Child Health Pipeline Training Program” that following summer. I conducted field research that focused on the public health of mothers and children in rural communities. The fall semester of sophomore year, I shadowed graduate students studying breast cancer cells. Later that same year, I began my own research with laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Upon my junior year, I was accepted into the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medical Program in Auburn, Alabama. At the same time, I was accepted into the Tropical and Infectious Diseases Association in Iquitos, Peru. I was able to study abroad and work in a lab focusing on the negative gram bacteria that was in the water of the poor community of Iquitos, Peru. I am awed by the variety of research opportunities that Penn offers to it's undergraduates through CURF Upon extensive research, I found projects that completely fit my discipline. They are conducted by Ms. Yuchi Han and Dr. Carlo Bartoli. Both professors are directing research related to the body's cardiovascular system; where one works with problems pertaining to LVAD patients developing gastrointestinal angiogenesis, the other pertains to diagnosing cardiac conditions like atrial fibrillation, nonischemic cardiomyopathy, and pulmonary arterial hypertension through echocardiograms and MRIs. As a transfer junior attending the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign, I am more than excited to seek for and to be a part of the research team. All the classes I had in my previous college, which is Green River College, a two-year college located in Washington, are non-research based classes, and there were no research opportunities available for students; therefore, I cannot stand to let myself blend into research coursework at the University of Illinois. I found the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program, and I believe this would be an excellent opportunity for me to start building my research experiences at the University. By looking through the graduate mentors’ descriptions, I am amazed by all the works they have made. All of them are fascinating and intriguing to me. Nevertheless, I am drawn to these three topics the most; they consecutively are Rekha Balachandran’s, Kim Drager’s and Aseel Addawood’s.
