When we think of a mental illness, the thoughts that come to mind can range within a variety of concepts: perhaps a person with imaginary voices in his or her head or someone whose emotions can alternate at the drop of a hat. While this is usually the case, not all—even these—are as dramatic as they seem. Mental illness presides as a main issue many people struggle with day to day. For this, there are people to help alongside their daily turmoil. These people are known as psychologists. Mental illness is a condition that interferes with a persons thinking, feeling, mood, reliability and daily functioning. Conditions usually create a lesser capacity for coping with ordinary needs in life. However, it does not relate to a persons character or intelligence. With no treatment of the mental illness, it can lead to various consequences including unnecessary disability, unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness, inappropriate incarceration, suicide and wasted lives. If someone wants to practice psychology you need a doctorate degree to practice but do not need to go to medical school. I think that there are many differences in each career and you must always ask yourself what is right for you. You must also take into consideration that school is a big part of this career path and you must dedicate your self to studying even when not in school anymore. It 's kind of like a professor in that regard you must also read medical journals and scholastic magazines in order to keep current on procedures and in teaching
“Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior” (Mayo Clinic). Mental disorders can happen many times through one’s life, but mental illness is classified as an ongoing problem with the symptoms that can affect the ability to perform normal day to day tasks (Mayo Clinic). Many people look at those afflicted with mental disorders as being crazy or clinically insane, while the reality is a problem many people live with on a daily basis with help from medications, psychologist visits, family, friends, help groups, and many other support systems. The lack of support available to mentally ill patients, the more that will refuse treatment and refuse to find help for their disorders. Many people who were born with mental disorders grow up knowing they have a problem, but people who develop them later in age don’t understand how to cope with it.

The symptoms can range from mild to severe, and can be presented in different forms, such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar disorder, Anxiety disorder, Depression, and Obsessive compulsive disorder. For years, people with mental illnesses have been shut away or institutionalized, and despite cultural progression in many areas, mental illnesses are still shamed and rarely brought to light outside of the psychiatric community. The many different forms in which mental illness can occur are incredibly prevalent in the world today, and there is a substantial debate about the way that they should be handled. Some people are of the opinion that mental illness is merely a variance in perception and that it either can be fixed through therapy or should not be treated at all, and that treatment can have negative side effects. Other groups of people believe that mental illness is a very serious affliction and should be treated as a disease through a combination of counselling and medication because people suffering from an untreated mental illness are a danger to themselves and society as a whole. This debate is a popular one, discussed everywhere from the medical field to the dinner table, and it is such because of the numerous lives it affects on the well-being of fellow members of society and the economy. People suffering from mental illnesses are afflicted with anything from delusions, to manic periods, to periods of deep emotional darkness due to experiences and brain chemistry (Johnson). Due to the negative effects untreated mental illness has been proven to have on the human well-being and society as a whole, medication should most certainly be seen as a valid and sometimes necessary way to treat those who suffer from mental illnesses.

Clinical psychology has evolved immensely and continues to make strides in the field of psychology. It focuses on assessing, diagnosing and treating individuals so that they can achieve a sense of wellbeing and normalcy. Research and by extension, statistics continues to play a key role in the development of the field, as research leads to extensive knowledge and the pioneering of future studies and information. Though clinical psychology may bear a striking resemblance to that of other mental health professions, it stands apart as a field that is primarily concerned with treating the mental disarray of individuals and studying the treatments that are most effective.

The course Psychology 361: Introduction to Clinical Psychology served as an introduction to the profession and personal life of clinical psychologists. We discussed the ethical and legal issues, the importance of the client-therapist relationship, the rights and responsibilities of the client and the therapist and the different types of therapy within this field of practice. However, after evaluating these concepts in depth, I have come to find some of the material surprising, interesting and difficult to understand. After recognizing my interests and conflicts within clinical psychology, I was able to evaluate myself and determine this profession would not suit me as an individual.
