Racism was supposedly put to an end after the Civil Rights Movement which lasted from, 1954-1968. However, racism is still present and is a huge problem mainly to African Americans. In the autobiography Black Boy, written and narrated by Richard Wright. Richard Wright was born after the Civil War but before the Civil Rights Movement. If he were writing an autobiography titled Black Boy today (in 2016), about a black boy growing up in the United States, he would write about: limited employment opportunities for African Americans, racism and unfairness in schools, and cruel violence and unfairness toward African Americans.

In schools African American are disrespected and are often provided with poor education. Due to the fact that African Americans were disrespected, they are often home schooled due to the extreme amount of racism. According to the article, “The Overwhelming Whiteness of U.S. Private Schools, in Six Maps and Charts,” by Emma Brown, almost no Blacks were enrolled in private schools. In a graph provided by the article, over 90 percent of enrolled students of private schools are white. This is not surprising because of white superiority and the amount of money Whites have compared to Blacks. However, not only did Blacks receive poor education, they were often home schooled due to the high amount of racism in public schools. As stated in the article, “Racism in Schools is Pushing More Black Families to Homeschool Their Children,” by Ama Mazama, over 10 percent of homeschooled students are African Americans. Due to the poor curriculum, racial stereotypes, and harsh school punishments, African Americans families are pushed towards home schooling their children. The way they were treated and the punishments they received were unfair and were unjust towards the African Americans. If Richard were to write about unfair education and discrimination against Blacks in schools, he would talk about equal rights for education and being treated equally at school.
