A Proposal to Implement Proactive Policing Most law enforcement professionals can agree that when it comes to policing smarter is better. Taxpayers would agree that efficient policing is key to making the most out of budget resources. There are many methods, policies, and procedures designed to prevent and eliminate crime. Law enforcement agencies across the country strive to incorporate new and innovative techniques to reduce crime. Predictive policing is one policy aimed to prevent crime by instituting proactive procedures to predict when, where, and how a crime might take place. “Predictive policing refers to any policing strategy or tactic that develops and uses information and advanced analysis to inform forward-thinking crime prevention” (Ferguson, 2012, p. 265). The days of police officers using old fashioned police work, intuition, and detective work to fight crime have slowly been replaced with the efficiency of predictive policing based on crime analysis. Crime mapping, data analysis, criminological theories, and predictive algorithms play an important part in predictive policing. These terms are all connected to predictive policing in one form or another. They all have the same goal to use crime data and crime information technology to guide law enforcement to make decisions in crime reduction. Simply put, predictive policing involves the use of digital technology to accurately predict areas inside city limits where crime will likely occur based on the probabilities analyzed from previous crime information.

Police officers need to find a unique balance between protecting the public and employing enforcement tactics.
