Pre 1914 Prose
Prose is the writing style of text such as a story and in this essay I will evaluate the use of the writing style in pre 1914 mystery prose and the way in which it is creates an effective atmosphere for the reader and how different to the modern, writing style of today.
The four examples of pre 1914 prose which I will use to outline the use of mystery prose are "The Red Room" by H.G. Wells, "The Signalman" by Charles Dickens, "The Adventures of the Speckled Band" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs.
The first example of pre 1914 prose, "The Red Room" is written in the form of a first person's view, which suggests that the story is from personal experience and it follows man who is in a house and begins in a room and the story slowly develops as he travels through the house and follows his journey towards the red room.
The setting is in a gothic manor, Lorraine castle in which a young duke has already died. This has already created a feeling of mystery and suspense and in contrast H.G. Wells is joined by an elderly couple who add suspense, "eight and twenty years you have lived, yet never seen the likes of this house", thus giving the impression that the house is old and decaying and also reflects the age of the couple.
The couple in the house are described in very derogatory, formidable terms, "said the man with the withered arm", age was a sign of death as well as disease and illness, and in those times it was feared greatly and it gives a sign of the affect of the house and what type of people live in it.
However, the writer is not scared easily and shows bravery, "I can assure you said I, that it will take a very tangible ghost to frighten me" hinting that the writer is young and bold and is in the state of certainty by using the word "tangible" which means a ghost would have to touch him to make it affect his state of mind.
The use of repetition is observable "It's your own choosing", this is repeated several times and validates that the writer has accepted the consequences of his decision and they are not responsible for the outcome. This adds suspense by hinting at a potential gruesome prediction of the outcome of the events which are to follow.
Style in literature is essential to create proper perception from the reader. This is equally as important as establishing appropriate tone. For this propose Ethel Wilson compliments such standards in her works “The Fog”, “Hurry, Hurry” and “The Window.” Wilson’s stylistic techniques are unmatched in uniqueness or assessing human nature versus physical nature. In the fore mentioned texts, Ethel Wilson composes her style from elements of symbolism, motif and character development to flourish understanding of the central idea of responsibility in the human mind when hidden behind nature.
In this quote, the author repeats many of the same words to show how the narrator feels. This builds suspense for me because the words that are being used many times help me to see that the character is scared about something, but we don't truly know what he did just yet.
Connected to the somber image of the town, The house is described with harsh diction such as “streaked with rust”, depicting the years of neglect. Affected by abuse, Petry describes the house as stained with “blood” in the form of rust. Despite the harsh outer layer, Lutie is drawn to it as her figurative and literal “sign”of refuge. A town that had been nothing but cold to her is finally seen as warm from the words on the sign; describing the house as “Reasonable” and open to “respectable tenants”.
Setting: The novel takes place a small town in Sterling, New Hampshire, where the tale begins to unravel in the school grounds of Sterling High. As the novel progresses the setting changes and begins to move through the homes of the main characters and the courtroom.

Description of the house follows, very high ceilings, old mansion it seems, with chimney stains, it has been let go. Jumps in time to narrators ex-husband making fun of narrators fantasizing about stains. The next paragraph is the father in a retirement home, always referring to things: ‘The Lord never intended’. This shows how old people have disdain for new things, the next generation appears to be more and more sacreligious. Shows streak of meanness when ‘spits’ out a reference to constant praying, narrator claims he does not know who he is talking to, but appears to be the very pious mother.
Poe begins his with a description of the setting. It was a “..dull, dark, and soundless day..” (Poe, 90). The narrator explains that he is on his way to an old friend 's house, Roderick and Madeline Usher, who both live in the mansion. He then explains what he sees at first glimpse of the mansion. “I looked upon the scene before me – the bleak walls, vacant eye-like windows, rank sedges, and a few white trunks of decayed trees..” (90). The setting is dark and full of potential evil; making it a romantic
In addition to vocabulary, Poe’s use of repetition ensures that his audience will appreciate the deeper meaning of his writing and understand which concepts are important in his stories. In “The Tell-Tale Heart,” the narrator, after stating that he is not insane, goes on to describe “how stealthily, stealthily” (Long) he proceeds when going into of the elderly man and blighting the room with the lantern. The repetition of “stealthily” demonstrates just how sneaky and narrator is, suggesting that he is crazy.
The essay will concern information pertaining to narrative text. First the essay will discuss the definition of narrative literature. Second, the essay will consist of the advantages of narrative literature. Third, the disadvantages of narrative literature will also be discussed. Fourth, the essay will consist of five possible uses of narrative text in middle school language arts.
Le Fanu uses gothic elements to intrigue and shock readers. This is clearly represented through vivid descriptions of isolated castles, abandoned churches, and mysterious woods. “… In the thick of the forest, overlooks the silent ruins of the town” (Le Faun Chapter I), “The castle is a ruin; the very village is deserted…” (Le Faun Chapter X). Le Faun uses this to create an eerie atmosphere. Through this, he manages to build suspense, forcing the readers to always be suspicious something is going to happen, but unable to determine how and when. This keeps the readers captivated. Similarly, by exploring the literature typified by ruin and mystery, Stoker explicitly exposes gothic tropes from Harker’s very first impression of the dilapidated castle. “The closed gates are of heavy old oak and iron, all eaten with rust” (Stoker Chapter II). As a result of this, Stoker is able to effectively convey the feelings of gloom, mystery and suspense. These are presented through the castle as it holds a lot of history, thus allowing Stoker to build up a haunting and ghostly atmosphere. This atmosphere is exaggerated through a sense of decaying which adds to the gothic convention in this context. “Hinges had fallen somewhat”, “wealth of dust’ and “dusty with age”, all indicating that the place is old, rusty and rather run-down (Stoker Chapter
In the story “The Fall of the House of Usher”, Poe presents the history of the end of an illustrious family. As with many of Poe’s stories, setting and mood contribute greatly to the overall tale. Poe’s descriptions of the house itself as well as the inhabitants thereof invoke in the reader a feeling of gloom and terror. This can best be seen first by considering Poe’s description of the house and then comparing it to his description of its inhabitants, Roderick and Madeline Usher.

Literature is an essential part of society in the present day and enables the communication between multiple parties in a written form. Texts can provide a vast knowledge on subjects dependent on content whereas novels are often seen as being purely for leisure and enjoyment. However it can often be seen that prose
In the mid 1800’s America was in full swing of the romanticism movement. During this time readers were entertained by the fresh new writing styles of the latest authors. There were several famous authors in this era such as: Washington Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, and William Cullen Bryant. One innovative author from this movement however, added a new dynamic writing style that still intrigues many readers today. Edgar Allen Poe, through his invention of detective stories, has become a house hold name to many. In his short stories “The Tell Tale Heart” and “The Black Cat,” Poe describes two heinous crimes committed by men whose motives can only be traced back to their deranged perception of reality, domestic relationships, and a soul whose thirst can only be quenched through violence.
