Poverty is one of the problems we face in our world, but I am focusing on some of the poverty problems we are facing here in America. There are over 40 million people in the United States that wake up every day not knowing where their next meal will come from or if they will even have a meal. I would like to share some facts about poverty and ideas to prevent poverty in the hopes that we can make a difference and help the lives of those in poverty.
According to the National Center for Law and Economic Justice, 1 out of 7 people are living in poverty in the U.S. Over 7.5% of US families live under the poverty line, and over 27.4% live twice below the poverty line. In 2012 over 46.5 million people in the United States were living in poverty; this is the greatest amount since 1993. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, out of those 46.5 million, 16 million are children under the age of 18. 7.2 million of these children are uninsured, which causes these children to get sick much more easily and fall behind in school.
