Poverty is the lack of one or many resources necessary for survival such as water, food, or money. Those who live in poverty are unable to provide for themselves. Therefore, they must rely on the support of others. Poverty can be found across the globe, affecting hundreds of countries. Villages located in sub-Saharan Africa are known for their isolation from vital resources, so food and water must constantly be shipped to villages in this area. Poverty also affects our nation, especially in large metropolitan areas. There are such large cases in cities that it is sometimes overlooked that poverty is found in local areas as well. Poverty is a serious issue that touches every community in the world. Therefore, poverty is also common locally in Conway, Arkansas. In the Conway area, there are 182 food pantries that are used to distribute food free of charge to those that are unable to feed themselves. In order to solve the global issue of poverty, we must begin locally, taking small steps to create a large change. To begin, we must fill local food pantries and take initiative in distributing the food. Once the local issue begins to diminish, the University of Central Arkansas can partner with other Arkansas universities in filling food pantries and banks. This partnership will begin the drive to distribute food across Arkansas. Poverty is a serious issue in the state of Arkansas finding that one in five Arkansans struggle to feed their families. With the assistance of universities across Arkansas, all food banks will be filled and the distribution of food will be much simpler. Using the same method, partnering with universities across the nation will decrease poverty in the United States. The final goal, similar to study abroad, is to create a program in which students from various universities are sent to foreign countries to distribute food and water to those in need.
