Potheads have been around for generations but they didn’t really become a big part of
society until the late 1960's with the arrival of the hippies. It is still a part of society whether
people like it or not. These potheads share similar views and norms therefore can be seen as a
subculture in today’s society. From the way they dress, their lingo and the music they listen to
they all share similar ways of life and see things in the same light. People may not like what they
do but they don’t care, they just want to get high.
Marijuana use goes back almost to the beginning of human existence and has been found
in many different ancient cultures. It has been used for many different reasons such as medicinal
and religious purposes but has never really been used by a large number of people. That is until
the hippies hit the scene in the late 60's. The hippies were the first real potheads as defined by
today’s standards. They smoke weed for the enjoyment of it and did not care for much else. They
felt free and happy. The hippies of the 60's are gone but the potheads live on in our world today.
A pothead is a person that smokes marijuana for recreational purposes. They are seen as
slackers because of their careless attitudes towards society and it’s issues. Their main focus in life
seems to just get high and have a good time. They do many things that normal people do like
going to school and having a job but they also share different values that make them different
from others in society. They may not all have exactly the same ideas and beliefs but much of them
are similar but when it comes to issues that involve marijuana their views are almost always the
same.
I followed some potheads around for a day to get an idea of how they lived their lives.
The slacker term used to describe potheads seems to fit pretty well because they slept most of the
day and didn’t really do much else, unless they had work or school and even then they only
seemed to go to school half of the time. They would just sit around the house and watch t.v. or
play video games. Finally one of them suggested smoking a “bowl”, which is a pipe used for
The movie portrayed marijuana as a drug that lured innocent teenagers into using it. Once under the influence of the narcotic, the teenagers went on to engage in many different acts of amoral behavior such as sex and other related crimes. During the 1920's and the 1930's, the media believed that violent behavior resulted from marijuana consumption. Of course there will always be extreme cases where these stereotypes do indeed take place, but for the most part the extent of the issues that this movie covered were extremely exaggerated and built up. It seemed as though the movie was made by bystanders that had never experienced the drug and had only done minimal research. Marijuana is in fact illegal and for reasonable cause, but it is proven that marijuana has therapeutic value and is unlikely to cause the moral dilemmas displayed in the movie. Often used for pain, in reality marijuana has mellow effects not accounted for and explained in the film.
Marijuana, also known as weed, is a green mixture of dry, shredded leaves and flowers of a hemp plant known as Cannabis sativa. Research has shown that marijuana has been around since the 1920s. People use marijuana because of the after effects. Studies have shown marijuana makes you feel delightful, it increases satisfaction while smoking, if you’re stressed, after smoking the marijuana you’ll be on cloud nine and the stress will no longer be present. Society has influenced people to smoke marijuana more each day.
The government and the older generations could not understand their way of life. Hippies were often portrayed as criminals, subversive to the morals and best interest of the public. Although misunderstood, the hippie had a great impact throughout the country, still surviving today in American culture. The term “hippie” itself became a universal term in the late sixties. It originated in a 1967 article in Ramparts, entitled “The Social History of the Hippies.” Afterward, the name was captured by the mass media as a label for the people of the new movement. (Yablonsky 28) Even before this, the word “hip” described someone who was “in” and “down”, wise to what was going on around him. By the 1960s, some of America’s youth created a gap between themselves and their parents. They grew their hair long because it was natural and therefore considered beautiful.
The general mindset of the 1960’s San Francisco scene is well summarized by Reebee Garafalo in his book Rockin’ Out: Popular Music in the USA when he states: “For the counterculture, the focus on mind-expanding drugs seemed to offer the possibility of greater self-awareness and consciousness, which would in turn lead to a world without war, competition, or regimentation.” The concept of expanding the mind in order to achieve a peaceful, utopian world naturally lends itself to the consumption of drugs. The image of half naked, marijuana smoking hippies dancing around in the park comes to mind when one thinks of the late 60’s Haight-Ashbury scene. Throughout the 1960’s, the counterculture era emerged from American society. Drug culture, hippies, sexual revolution, literature, and music all greatly contributed to influencing the attitudes and ideals of the late twentieth century. Each aspect of the counterculture influenced people’s ideologies and lifestyles. They developed a new sense of creativity which was never found in previous years in the United States. People experimented beyond their comfort levels and developed a ideals which contradicted the restricting ones prior to the movement. Counterculture left an everlasting impact. The emphasis on hippies and drugs and the other aspects of the society during the 60's has diminished, but towards the end of that century, long hair and colorful clothes became a trend, and the overuse of drugs led to overdose and addictions, including many Vietnam War veterans.

The hippies tried to create a foundation of love and peace around the world, but essentially failed. They did contribute to black civil rights, the end of the Vietnam War, women’s and homosexual rights in America. Even though the Hippie Movement is over, it is still remembered through its music and stories that were passed down from parents to their children. A little peace of the Hippie Era still survives inside the spirit of America today, and will continue to live as long as the music is still played and people have a hope for peace and love throughout the world.
When people hear the term hippie, they think of men and woman in loose clothing with flowers weaved in their hair.
