Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that is created by a traumatic life event. PTSD was very common among war veterans because of the experience or “shell shock” they encountered in a war or battle. However, PTSD can also result from other traumatic incidents such as kidnapping, vehicle accidents, rape, torture, or just witnessing a horrific event such as a plane crash or murder. For people who are suffering from PTSD, ordinary events can serve as reminders of the trauma and actually trigger flashbacks that may make a person lose sanity or reenact events in form of images and sounds of the traumatic event (Grohol, 2013).
Genetics is one of the relevant factors that develop PTSD (biological). One recent study given by voices of yahoo states that about 4,000 pairs of twins who have served in the Vietnam War discovered that if either one of the twins develop related symptoms of stress, a twin that is identical is more likely to receive symptoms of stress disorders than a fraternal twin would. Also, some researchers have suggested that PTSD is caused by various numbers of genes and not just one gene; Researchers are hoping to find more answers in this area of the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (Lain, 2008).
Besides biological causes there are also psychological causes to this disorder. People go through emotional and psychological distress because of extremely stressful events that break down their sense of security, making them disposed as well as having the feeling of helplessness. Disturbing experiences often deal with intimidation to life or safety, feelings of being overwhelmed or alone, even if it does not deal with physical harm.
