“I dream of painting and then I paint my dream” said Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh was a famous Dutch post-impressionist painter whose thick brush strokes, color, emotion, and a way to escape from life was what he was best known for in his paintings. He was not a wealthy man because he was only able to sell one painting in his whole lifetime. Later in his adult life, he suffered from anxiety and had bursts of mental illness, which would cause him to be in and out of psychiatric wards and resulted in lengthy pauses in his ability to create beautiful paintings. The founders did not agree with the naturalistic of color and light brush strokes in art movement of impressionism. Its focus was on emphasizing on abstract and symbolic content. This art movement was led by Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat and by Vincent Van Gogh. A main focus in this movement was to use vivid colors, thick application, real life subject matter, distort different forms in an expressive way and used more geometric forms. Van Gogh tried to paint the impressionist techniques with lighter stokes more natural and failed in the process. That is when, with the help with his four friends they created this movement that helped him with his paintings. In his paintings he used a lot of swirls brush strokes and thick paint application, where he also was able to express his feelings and his state of mind with painting distorted faces, movement, and darkness as well. All the founders disagreed on certain aspects on the way this movement should be structured which later disintegrated and the next art movement came along. Van Gogh painted this art work when he was in the asylum room in Saint-Remy-de-Provence. It was just before sunrise when he was facing a window outside his room when he decided to depict it into a painting. Theo would receive letters from Van Gogh describing the starry nights and how he would spend his nights waiting for the sunrise. The Starry Night was the only painting he created that was a nocturne painting depicting yellow stars, swirls of blue clouds, and a yellow half moon with a view of different darker shades browns and blue with a view of a town below. This is by far my favorite piece of art work from Van Gogh. I enjoy this piece so much that when I was nine years old, I remember writing a short book with drawings highlighting important facts about his life. This letter was used when he was describing his inspiration for one of his best-known paintings, The Starry Night which was created in 1889. The window that he refers to was in the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy, in southern France, where he tried to relax away from his emotional suffering while he kept making art.

Van Gogh's birth came one year to the day after his mother gave birth to a first, stillborn child; also named Vincent. There has been much speculation about Vincent van Gogh suffering later psychological trauma as a result of being a "replacement child" and having a deceased brother with the same name and same birth date. Early in life, he displayed a moody, restless character that was to spoil his every pursuit. This theory remains unproven, however, and there is no actual historical evidence to support it.

With Theo van Gogh’s association, Vincent met reputable Impressionist painters such as Émile Henri Bernard and Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin. Impressionism served as a platform for Vincent in developing his own style . He explored with colours, a stark contrast from his usual dark and sombre style. The influence of Japonisme charmed Vincent into residing in Arles where he began painting landscapes. Thereafter, Vincent voluntarily checked into Saint-Rémy sanatorium where his works reflected strong colours and lights of the countryside around him. His manic depression and epileptic condition, led to his suicide on July 27th 1890.

The paining ‘Starry night’ was made when Van Gogh was in a mental asylum after he had an episode that resulted in him cutting of his own ear. The painting depicts the view from his asylum room, which Bennett could incorporate into his feeling of being trapped in a society that doesn’t accept him.

The impressionist movement is often considered to mark the beginning of the modern period of art. It was developed in France during the late 19th century. The impressionist movement arose out of dissatisfaction with the classical, dull subjects and clean cut precise techniques of painting. They preferred to paint outdoors concentrating more on landscapes and street scenes, and began to paint ordinary everyday people and liked to show the effects in natural light.
At the lower portion of the painting we see the dark blue mountain range which compensates for what would have been the negative space in the upper portion of the painting where the moon is located. The presents of both allows each the moon and mountains to have equal weight in the piece, which is what creates balance. The brush strokes of blue variation which created the swirled wind effect also helps with transition between the top and bottom portions of the piece. Like many artists in this era, Van Gogh also experimented with line and form. This art movement of post-impressionism took places during the 19th century and early 20th century as artists began to counteract the vast majority of realism art that was originally taking place.
Van Gogh’s art saw a correlation with the Enlightenment. Within his work, his emotions played a key factor. Each painting helped free him of his misery, and he painted with the love from his heart. All of his paintings are also extremely delicate. With the depth of colors, details to structures, and the combining of ideas, van Gogh knew how delicate his work must be in order
Starry night is an oil canvas by the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh. I have read that this painting depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint Remy de Provence, just before the sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village. I have observed that it has circle pattern in it where the sun rises. Other people says that it is a painting of a scene at night with 11 swirly stars and a bright yellow crescent moon. In the background there are hills, in the middle ground there is a moonlit town with a church that has an elongated steeple, and in the foreground there is the dark green silhouette of a cypress tree.

The different art movements are created as a reflection of the type of response to the existing or older art movement. It does not necessarily mean scrapping the old to make way for the new. In art, the new movement always takes with it part of the past, but what makes it distinct is the new and fresh perspective that it brings to the table that wasn't present or appreciated before. If anything, the chronology of art movements is testament to the growth process of the world of art, proof of how the art has been evolving ever since. Impressionism and Post-Impressionism are two art movements that happened in succession, and the characteristics of and existence of Post Impressionism reflects how Post Impressionism is a reaction to the earlier Impressionism and how Post Impressionism, despite its efforts to introduce something new still retained many important characteristics found in Impressionism.
