Through the past about thirty years, music has evolved into new forms of expressions. Hip-hop has become a world widespread form of communication and it is enjoyed around the world. It is no longer limited to rap and break dancing; in this cultural it represents a multi-billion dollar industry that influences the nation from design and fashion to television and professional sports, mass media marketing and advertising. Hip-hop today is involved in numerous aspects of young people’s lives in addition to sending a lyrical message that influences positive actions. Hip-hop is a positive guide, such as helping to understand what people in the world are going through, gets teens to understand that they are not alone, and writing lyrics along with composing music giving people a voice when they are scared to speak.
All humans live different lives; some grow up without a mother or father, so they turn to music or other activities. Hip-hop music lyrics help individuals understand their situation. "It is though improvisation that music grows naturally from its roots in the young child …" (Pond 2014). For instance, teens start creating their own name at 15 to 17 years of age by writing down their thoughts or problems. They want to tell a story about what they went through, so other; will know that someone has also been through the same situation. In fact, throughout time music has evolved to change aspects of the world and creating more creative thinking.

This is due to attitudes and behaviors of American Youth. In addition, it teaches African American youth to use profanity. Since hip-hop has expanded from the undergrounds in Bronx in the 70’s it has grew into a popular accepted music genre. Consequently, as it progressed from the golden age it gradually grew away from its original roots. If one were to evaluate the change of lyrics in hip-hop, they would see a difference between early hip-hop and today’s hip-hop. The current state of hip-hop is in a stage where things like hey young world are outdated. Instead of broadcasting out a positive message, hip-hop sends out a message of sex, drug, and violence. The early musicians who helped solidify hip-hop, by producing music that told stories on subjects of race, respect, or even music that had a positive message.
Hip hop has permeated popular culture in an unprecedented fashion. Because of its crossover appeal, it is a great unifier of diverse populations. Although created by black youth on the streets, hip hop's influence has become well received by a number of different races in this country. A large number of the rap and hip hop audience is non-black. It has gone from the fringes, to the suburbs, and into the corporate boardrooms. Because it has become the fastest growing music genre in the U.S., companies and corporate giants have used its appeal to capitalize on it. Although critics of rap music and hip hop seem to be fixated on the messages of sex, violence, and harsh language, this genre offers a new paradigm of what can be (Lewis, 1998.) The potential of this art form to mend ethnic relations is substantial. Hip hop has challenged the system in ways that have unified individuals across a rich ethnic spectrum. This art form was once considered a fad has kept going strong for more than three decades. Generations consisting of Blacks, Whites, Latinos, and Asians have grown up immersed in hip-hop. Hip hop represents a realignment of America?s cultural aesthetics. Rap songs deliver a message, again and again, to keep it real. It has influenced young people of all races to search for excitement, artistic fulfillment, and a sense of identity by exploring the black underclass (Foreman, 2002). Though it is music, many people do not realize that it is much more than that. Hip hop is a form of art and culture, style, and language, and extension of commerce, and for many, a natural means of living. The purpose of this paper is to examine hip hop and its effect on American culture. Different aspects of hip hop will also be examined to shed some light that helps readers to what hip hop actually is. In order to see hip hop as a cultural influence we need to take a look at its history.
Music is something that everybody has a connection to. Sometimes it evokes memories of a childhood long ago or someone in your life that connected with you in your most vulnerable moment. However, music has an origin. It has been around since the time man began to express himself. It is the most organic of all art forms, and it continues to manifest itself in many different forms that seem to fit in all aspects of our lives, no matter how complicated or how trivial it may seem. At the core, music represents all that is good or bad in the world. It’s a way people from all over this globe can relate to one another without ever speaking a chosen language.
From its conception in the 1970's and throughout the 1980's, hip hop was a self-contained entity within the community that created it. This means that all the parameters set for the expression came from within the community and that it was meant for consumption by the community. Today, the audience is from outside of the community and doesn’t share the same experiences that drive the music. An artists’ success hinges on pleasing consumers, not the community. In today's world, it isn’t about music that rings true for those who share the artists' experiences, but instead, music that provides a dramatic illusion for those who will never share the experiences conveyed. This has radically changed the creative process of artists and the diversity of available music. Most notably, it has called in to question the future of hip hop.
Chinese philosopher Confucius said, “Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without”. Music is everywhere and anywhere, in a park, in the car, in a school, even in the shower. Every day kids, teens, and even adults bond over the same music. I have played music almost all of my life and enjoy listening to it as well. Imagine our youth all over the country being exposed to this explicit kind of language. There is no need to imagine, because it is already happening. Ever since the rise of Rap and Hip Hop music, teens have been turning to them to help solve their problems. However these kinds of music can be very destructive to teens. It is not the youth’s fault; it is the content that the music contains. Although Rap and Hip Hop music can be a force for good, they can also have an extremely negative impact on the attitudes and behaviors of our youth.
This ethnography, written and told from Campbell’s point of view, shares her experiences as she sets out on her goal to study the musical culture among children in hopes to provide insight into how music plays a role in the lives of children of all different ages. This ethnography is split into three different sections, the first detailing Campbell’s different periods of observation. During her studies on the subject, Campbell spent time in different settings (such as a school bus, a cafeteria, a music class, and at a playground) in the hopes to observe their behavior and create detailed field notes in order to provide details into their interactions and their usage of music. In the second section, Campbell shares her conversations with several different children. Through these conversations, we get a taste of how music can be integrated within many different aspects of children’s lives. Music is a form of life that has a variety of purposes; even the human mind cannot comprehend them all. It should be considered a need but because of the economy and its hardship it has bestowed upon people, when school budgets tighten, music programs feel the pressure early and brace for a potential beating (Jennings). Our education system should allow children to express themselves through efficacious learning experiences, giving them the opportunity them to get in-touch with, and strengthen, their creativity (Lim and Chung, S60, Terrance). There is no doubt other programs includes this, but when it comes to music, people question its capability and it is considered “not cool”. Without music in our education programs, children are mislead and cheated from their futures (Music 110), and the focus wonders towards the opposing spectrum. We need musical instruction because it can play an important role in brain development, help achieve academic success, preserve the past, and most importantly, provide opportunities to build our character in a positive, and meaningful, environment, even through the hardship
Hip Hop has been manipulated into a commercial medium and has been used to create clients that buy the music and make it popular by showing it off in clubs and to their friends. Hip-hop is arising through marketing and capital, music has become digital in our time and that has increased revenue through the roof. Marketing has become a big factor because big time artists have linked together to become better than their selves and that has helped hip hop evolve. Commercial hip-hop has deteriorated what so many emcees in the 80’s tried to build, a culture of music, dance, and creativity allowing for everyone to have fun and express themselves including that meaningful message that opens the listener’s mind and has them wanting more good
People are surrounded by music every day of their lives. They hear it in their homes, on the radio on their way to work; some people have even caught themselves humming the tune of their favorite song to themselves. But how many people actually listen and not just hear the music they are listening to? Teens in particular don’t realize the message behind the music they are quoting the lyrics to, or the effect it has on them. In today’s culture where rap music has become increasingly popular, many teens aren’t realizing what they are listening to. A lot of teens would argue that the music they listen to has no effect on them, but they are wrong. Rap music, especially, has had a major impact on teenagers in today’s society.
