Social Media’s Impact on Youth Likes, favorites, retweets, shares, to some these words mean nothing, to others they may mean the world. Teenagers today often measure their self-worth on the reactions they receive on posts or pictures they put on social media. Social media exposes youth today to many things that they never would have access to if it were not for the Internet. Before internet and social media there was still bullying, however social media now exposes children to a possible 24 hour flow of what people call, cyber bullying. Social media also allows teenagers to often compare themselves to the models or movie star characters that are often shown on social media. Social media is most definitely one of those forces. Teenagers are now exposed to 24-hour access to these websites, and when the feedback they are receiving from these websites is negative they are also exposed to that all 24 hours of the day. Imagine being bullied by someone; now imagine being able to replay the words that person said to you whenever you wanted. Also imagine being able to get on a website and seeing so many prefect characters of which you look nothing alike. Social media allows people to get on at whatever time of the day and expose themselves to these factors. These factor in which impact how teenagers see themselves, social media exposes these things to teenagers everywhere, and its impact is great. Self-esteem, self-worth, and confidence are all things that can change because of social media. Due to the high suicides and suicide attempts, which happen because of at least one cyber bullying interaction, it can be assumed the impact social media has on todays society is mostly negative.

James Franco says “Attention seems to be the name of the game when it comes to social networking”, I agree with this as all teenagers in today’s society seem to want is attention. This affects them by distancing themselves from who they truly are and what they believe in as they are very focused on trying to give the people only what they like to see. Women and girls seem to be more affected by the mass media than do men and boys. Females frequently compare themselves to others, finding the negative rather than looking at the positive aspects of their own body. From "thintastic" blogs to suicide stories, social media has become not only a source of conversation but a gateway to harmful suggestions that many teenagers see and believe to be allowable, when in fact the situations proposed are dangerous to those who attempt them. Statistics show that 20% of anorexic teenagers will die prematurely, and 80% of teenagers who commit suicide are depressed (South). Social media has glorified and brought to attention eating disorders, depression, and suicide among teens that might otherwise not become a statistic in these critical categories.
Teens on social media have been around for many years. Have you ever thought of the Internet being a place where teen’s self-esteem may be affected in a negative way? However, it doesn 't mean that social media is out to purposely make people feel this way, it 's all how the teens per take. Many people don’t realize that the little things others post on social media can affect someone in the long run. This is especially true with young teenagers who have access to the internet and social media platforms. I strongly believe that social media does affect teens self-esteem by lowering it due to the reason of advertisement, personal image, and bullying.
Communication plays an important role and becomes an essential part in our daily lives. Today we have taken communication to new level as social media and social networking. They have had a tremendous impacts on the word, on our culture and in business as well. Social media websites are some of the most popular on the internet, such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. They are the places where people can interact with others easily and expose themselves to strangers. Our generation and the younger ones have more opportunities to grow up with the new development of technology that will shape the way they live of communicating and sharing ideas. There has been controversy as to whether parents should limit the use of social media by teenagers. Teenagers feel that there is no need to limit the use of their social media networking, but on the other hand, parents should feel the need to limit their use and also keep track of their teen’s social networking. Social media allows students to be connected with their peers, teens who post positive status are more likely to be involved in extracurricular activities, and for many teens putting up “selfies” is a self confidence boost; however, too much social media can affect students GPA in school, cyber bullying can affect social health. Social media is most popular amongst adolescents. According to a poll conducted by Infographic, nine out of ten teenagers have used social media. Whenever a new technological advancement occurs there is concern over how it will affect society. In the case of social media, the concern is greatest for adolescents. So, how does social media effect adolescents? Social media can have both negative and positive effects. Some of the effects of using social media can be depression, addiction, cyberbullying and exposure to inappropriate content.
