Social Media’s Impact on Youth Likes, favorites, retweets, shares, to some these words mean nothing, to others they may mean the world. Teenagers today often measure their self-worth on the reactions they receive on posts or pictures they put on social media. Social media exposes youth today to many things that they never would have access to if it were not for the Internet. Before internet and social media there was still bullying, however social media now exposes children to a possible 24 hour flow of what people call, cyber bullying. Social media also allows teenagers to often compare themselves to the models or movie star characters that are often shown on social media. Social media is most definitely one of those forces. Teenagers are now exposed to 24-hour access to these websites, and when the feedback they are receiving from these websites is negative they are also exposed to that all 24 hours of the day. Imagine being bullied by someone; now imagine being able to replay the words that person said to you whenever you wanted. Also imagine being able to get on a website and seeing so many prefect characters of which you look nothing alike. Social media allows people to get on at whatever time of the day and expose themselves to these factors. These factor in which impact how teenagers see themselves, social media exposes these things to teenagers everywhere, and its impact is great. Self-esteem, self-worth, and confidence are all things that can change because of social media. Due to the high suicides and suicide attempts, which happen because of at least one cyber bullying interaction, it can be assumed the impact social media has on todays society is mostly negative.
