The assessment portfolio is used for summative evaluation of students' mastery of fundamental curriculum outcomes. A portfolio includes a collection the student’s work that reflects their effort, progress and achievement. Thus, a portfolio should contain students' best completed work which is selected from the student’s collection of work by both the student and the teacher. The assessment portfolio is particularly compatible with audio-visual productions such as photographs, videotapes, and electronic records of students' works. The portfolio should also contain a written analysis and reflections by the student after the selection of the works to be included in the portfolio.
Process of portfolio analysis
1. Setting assessment purpose
The most important step of portfolio analysis is setting up the objective of the portfolio analysis. Having a clear purpose of the portfolio offers focus and a sense of direction for the assessment process. The purpose of the portfolio will be based on issue such as the aspect of language learning to be used for assessment, the reason for making the portfolio, the users of the portfolio among others.
2. Identification of instructional Objectives
The next step is to identify the instructional Objectives and goals which have been set for students to achieve by the end of a specified period and the accomplishment of the area indicated by the assessment purpose. As we have discussed herein, the portfolio method of assessment has become extensively used in educational settings for assessment of students’ performance and measuring progress of the students as they the process of learning or adjustment as it transpires. As opposed to other assessment methods like test scores, Portfolios include practical descriptions, examples and illustrations of what the student is going through in and experiencing. This enables the educators to measure the progress of the students. Portfolio assessment is efficient in measurement of complex constructs as well as individualized assessment.
Throughout this portfolio, I demonstrate my abilities to critique my own writing and to make an argument based on evidence and analysis. My revised papers are the evidence, and the analysis I make is how these papers show my growth, improvement, and now capable writing abilities to meet the outcomes of English 131. In the very creation of this portfolio, in addition to the revised essays, I accomplish multiple global objectives for this class. These objectives include writing a complex claim, writing with intertextuality, showing awareness of my audience, and revealing the effect of successful, critical revision and editing techniques. As I aimed to meet these outcomes throughout the quarter, my writing slowly, but surely developed into critical, organized, and academically correct text.
It has been seen that factors like one’s economic and racial background can heavily influence one’s performance on a tests, as they are not given the same opportunities as those given to more affluent students. A student’s emotional well-being is also at stake as many students come out of tests doubting their overall intelligence, even though they were quite confident in the material and so much is hinged on test scores that it places a great deal of pressure on students to do well. Standardized tests also restrict teacher’s ability to learn due to the restrictions that standardized test place on the material being taught, which makes it very hard for teachers to go beyond the required and teach more interesting things. Some good alternative solutions have been limiting the amount of standardized tests given by sampling a few students, shortening the length of exams, and allotting more time to complete these tests. How well do standardized tests work as tools for obtaining information about children’s literacy strengths and needs? Standardized tests have both positive and negative uses as they pertain to obtaining information and what that information can be used for. The use of portfolios can also be used to guide instruction, and they can be used as informal or summative assessments. Portfolios serve the purpose of an extensive record of a student’s best work and skills. As the student progresses through life, record keeping and reflection becomes an expectation. A résumé cannot possibly describe the entire list of qualities each individual possesses. As a result, portfolios thrive in high schools and offices alike to demonstrate a person’s capabilities in the greatest detail. Any person with a future-oriented mindset should have a portfolio to create opportunities for a successful life.
Through assessment students and teachers are able to determine the level of mastery a student has achieved with standards taught. Both formative and summative assessment should be purposeful and targeted to gain the most accurate data to drive further instruction (Ainsworth, 2010). While this syllabus does a good job of identifying the need for both formal and informal assessments, the way in which this is communicated does not provide enough detail for understanding. Simply listing assessment types does not give any insight into how these assessments fit in the learning process of this course. While some of the assessments mentioned could be common assessments chosen by the school or district to gain insight into the effectiveness of instruction, the inclusion of authentic assessments is most beneficial to students and demonstrates learning in a context closer to that of a work environment (Rovai, 2004). Unfortunately, this particular course, according to this syllabus, relies heavily on quizzes and traditional tests and essays to form the bulk of assessment opportunities. While other activities, such as formative assessments, journaling and discussions are mentioned as possible avenues for scoring, they are given a very low percentage of the overall grade.
