Living in a world where people are divided into classes due to their house income allowed Pop Artist to break that barrier and create something out of the ordinary. Pop Artist believed that everything in the world is somehow connected with each other and they show you exactly how through their work. Not only did Pop Artist look within the world of advertisements, cartoons, and famous images, but they embraced the fact that they could change existing images along the way. It began with the individuals known as the Independent Group of Great Britain. They would hold meetings to discuss the popular culture around the world and rebelled against the accepted style. Pop Art was a Modern art movement that emerged durring the mid-twentieth century in both England and America. It first began to gain recognition in the early 1950’s, after about twenty years of Abstract, as artists altered their attention and looked to change. In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, Pop Art became much more popular to the general public and successful for the movement’s artists due to the world growing tired of the repeditive forms of Abstract. Art Nouveau was a direct descendant of the Arts and Crafts movement and influenced by celtic ornament as well as Japanese woodcut prints, all this resulted in an international style based on decoration.
In the lyrics of male R&B/Hip-Hop artists in the early 1980’s, there is a noticeable shift in the language used to portray women and then themselves. The language shift is in choosing words that are filled with love and emotion to overbearing words that aim to separate men and women by social status. During the 1980’s, many of the popular songs by male hip-hop artist tend to focus on the relationship aspect of male and female interactions. This observation is similar to Frith’s (1986) finding, where most successful pop songs centers around being “happy in love”, “frustrated in love” as well as having sex interests. The “happy in love” factor that Frith notices in pop songs is seen in early R&B/Hip-Hop music. Instead of using derogatory terms
Hip-Hop’s criticism of George W. Bush is a good example of hip-hop’s reflection of Black public opinion. The Republican candidate who already had a low approval rating of 57% amongst African-Americans received an even lower approval rating after his lackluster efforts to support Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 (Jones, 2003; Cillizza & Sullivan 2013).
